The chosen is Amazon Basics Automatic Small Compact Travel Umbrella.
This umbrella has three main parts: the canopy, the runner, the shaft and the handle.
The canopy is made from water repellent fabric or plastic and it’s the part of the umbrella that
is responsible for protecting the User from the rain and/or provide cover from the Sun. The
canopy is stretched over the Ribs that provide support for the canopy, The Ribs are designed
from multiple metal rods connected by joints, and the ribs connect altogether by a Runner.
The Runner is a part that can freely slide up and down the Shaft. This will allow the User to
open and close the Umbrella, thus making the umbrella easier to store and carry while not
being used.
The Shaft is the part which connects the canopy to the handle. It contains a sleeve and two
springs that determine the canopy’s position. When the strings are opened, the sleeve is on
the top part of the shaft and the canopy is opened. When the strings are closed, the sleeve is
on the bottom and the canopy is closed.
Finally, the handle is the part that allows the user to hold the umbrella in their hand.

Evaluating Criteria [4]
The evaluating criteria table provides a comparative overview of four popular car
models – Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and Volkswagen. The table focuses on three key
attributes: Engine Power, Comfort, and Cost. We can see that the Honda is the most
expensive car with highest horsepower (sharing with Volkswagen) with the highest rmp
while the cheapest car is Nissan with a moderate level of engine power.
The criteria comfort is average according to ride quality, seat comfort, Interior noise &
space, cabin materials & quality, visibility, suspension & damping, and lastly interior
layout & storage. However, a rigorous analysis is required to evaluate the comfort in a
deeper level. Below you will find the table 2 where we evaluate the comfort criteria and
other factors.
The comfort scores have been taken from the online resource Edmunds [5]. They have
reviewed a range of criteria to give equivalent scores for each car. These scores have
been used to quantify the comfort in each of the models.
Concept Matrix
Reevaluating Comfort Criteria
Here we are evaluating the different parameters of all the cars. We have divided it into
three categories- Fuel Economy, Interior & Specs.

Table 3: Concept Score Matrix
After conducting a concept scoring matrix, we have evaluated that Volkswagen is the
ideal choice. In the parameters, engine power, comfort and cost, Volkswagen scores the
highest points, while the Honda Civic is the least ideal choice.
A few of the parameters that we considered are – Fuel economy, air conditioning, fuel
tank capacity and cruise control. One of the main reasons why the Volkswagen gained
the most points was due to its high engine power or 158hp@5500 rpm. It also has
additional features that differentiate it from the rest of the competition such as adaptive
cruise control, leatherette seats and Climatronic air conditioning.
The Nissan Sentra has fewer features as compared to the Honda Civic and Toyota
Corolla, yet its low cost puts it above these two in terms of points. Finally, the Honda
Civic with its high price tag and limited features comes in as the last choice.

Quality has been defined as customer satisfaction (or "fitness for use"). Quality can also be defined as "conformance to specifications". In theory, if you create the right specifications and then manufacture a product that meets these specifications, you should achieve customer satisfaction.
Consider the following four scenarios for a particular product:
A) Conforms to specifications and is competitive in its adequacy.
B) Conforms to specifications and is not competitive in its suitability.
C) It does not conform to specifications and is competitive in its education.
D) Does not conform to specifications and is not competitive in its education.
Which of these are not, in theory, feasible, but in practice occur and cause a lot of conceptual confusion?
Can you cite some examples?

You are a biomedical engineer working for a small orthopaedic firm that fabricates rectangular shaped fracture
fixation plates from titanium alloy (model = "Ti Fix-It") materials. A recent clinical report documents some problems with the plates
implanted into fractured limbs. Specifically, some plates have become permanently bent while patients are in rehab and doing partial
weight bearing activities.
Your boss asks you to review the technical report that was generated by the previous test engineer (whose job you now have!) and used to
verify the design. The brief report states the following... "Ti Fix-It plates were manufactured from Ti-6Al-4V (grade 5) and machined into
solid 150 mm long beams with a 4 mm thick and 15 mm wide cross section. Each Ti Fix-It plate was loaded in equilibrium in a 4-point bending
test (set-up configuration is provided in drawing below), with an applied load of 1000N. The maximum stress in this set-up was less than the
yield stress for the Ti-6Al-4V…

Case Study – The New Engineer
Jeff was just hired by GSI, Inc. to be their Environmental and Safety Coordinator. This is Jeff's first position after completing his engineering degree. He had taken a course in safety engineering as part of his studies and felt confident that he could handle the job.
Management at GSI, Inc. has assured him that they are committed to maintaining a safe workplace. They have never had an individual dedicated to this task full-time. They will implement his recommendations if he can justify them.
As Jeff begins to get familiar with the operations, he spends considerable time on the production floor. He notices workers clean their tools before break with a liquid from an unmarked 55-gallon drum. They also use this liquid to clean residue from their skin. They use paper towels to dry their tools and hands, throw these towels in the trash, and head to the break room for a snack and/or smoke.
