ARCE 476 – Homework #4 November 30, 2023 1. Coils & Fluid Mass Transfer: A coil is designed to heat 5000 CFM of air from 75°F to 90°F. Since this is sensible heat energy transfer use the appropriate “air” calculation to determine the energy (Btu/hr) transfer at this coil. The design hot water temperatures in and out of the coil are 165°F to 135°F, what is the HW flow rate in the coil (GPM)? (calculate) 2. Pump & Pipe Pressure Drop : A pump is required to deliver 8 GPM of water through 450 feet of piping. From Lecture #6 Slide 13 it is determined that 1-1/4” copper pipe is the proper size. There is also a cooling coil in this circuit that has a pressure drop of 4.1 psi. What is the total pressure that must be supplied by the pump (in feet of head)? (calculate) 3. Pump Operation : Why is it important to avoid Cavitation at a pump? What is the condition that needs to be maintained to assure this doesn’t happen? (answer) 4. HVAC Pipe Sizing : For the Example on Slide 15 in Lecture #6, if the cooling tower capacity is 250 tons and designed to operate from 95°F to 85°F, what is the flow rate? What pipe material and pipe size should be used? (calculate & answer) 5. HVAC Piping : If the weight 10” steel piping is 40 lbs/linear ft, what is the weight of a 55- foot-long section of 10” condenser water piping assuming it is full of water? (calculate) 6. Domestic Cold-Water Supply : Why would a booster pump need to be added to the Domestic Cold Water Supply system in a building? (answer)
7. Plumbing & Structural Coordination : Give 2 examples of critical items to coordinate between plumbing and structural system design? (answer) 8. Plumbing Pipe Slope : If a 4” waste pipe needs to travel laterally 50 feet from one riser location to another how much vertical clearance from any obstructions is required (include the pipe size)? (calculate) 9. Storm Drainage : The City of San Luis Obispo Rainfall & Storm Drainage Design requirements are 1.5”/hour rainfall. For a 15,000 SF roof area and maximum roof drain riser size of 3” per CPC Table 1103.2 shown on Slide #31 of Lecture #6, how many roof drains will be required? (calculate) 10. AC vs DC Power: Give an example of DC power and one reason why AC power is more commonly used? 11. Electrical Power : What purpose does a Capacitor serve in an electrical system? 12. Power : A booster pump station includes a pump with a 480V/3Ø motor drawing 18 amps, a 120V/1Ø circuit drawing 6-amps for controls, and four (4) 277V/1PH 32-watt light fixtures. What is the total peak power consumption in kW for this station? (calculate)
13. Electricity Cost : If the average cost of electricity is $0.15/kWh and the controls and lighting operate year-round, but the pump operates an average of 60% of the year, what is the annual electricity cost to operate the booster pump station in #12? (calculate) 14. BIPV : Name 2 benefits and 2 challenges for considering Building Integrated PV? (answer) 15. BIPV: What are 2 changes that took place in the recent code cycle that impacted renewable energy applications in commercial buildings? (answer) 16. Electrical Coordination: Who is the one trade Electrical wants to stay away from and why? 17. Electrical Coordination: Why is Grounding provided in a building, and how does structural steel in buildings contribute to this?
