Describe the operation of a counterbalance valve.
Counterbalance Valve are used with cylinders to safely hold the suspended loads and deal
with holding up heavy weights. For example, Fork Lift 3.
Discuss the lab reading (refer to CHART A: Flow and pressure during extension and retraction).
From the Chart above we can see that in the counterbalance values, when the cylinder needs to extend it requires less pressure to do so but when it needs to retract it requires more pressure so that the heavy load or the load that is on the cylinder will not fall at full speed and cause damage to the product(s). As the same can be said for the Pressure relieve Valve.

What would be counter balance valve setting for 500 pounds load, if cylinder bore diameter is 1.5 inches and rod diameter is 0.625 inches? Ap = pi * (1.5)^2 / 4
Ap = 1.767145868 in^2
Pp = F/ Ap = 500 / 1.767145868
Pp = 282.9421211 PSI
Pp = 282.94 PSI
Counterbalance Valve Setting = 1.3 * Pp
Counterbalance Valve Setting = 1.3 * 282.9421211
Counterbalance Valve Setting = 367.8247574 PSI
Counterbalance Valve Setting = 367.82 PSI
Counterbalance Valve Setting is 30% over the required System Pressure
