Assignment
This assignment is designed to introduce you to some of the resources professional Engineers use in their practice. It should also familiarize you with finding material properties, finding research on materials applications and using formatted citations in APA style to cite publications. Consult the ME 215 Research Guide
for guidance.
1.
In a brief paragraph, describe what “magnesium alloy” is and how it is being applied in the automotive industry. Use at least two
sources Provide in-text citations
and a “
References” section
according to APA style
.
(30 pts)
Magnesium alloy is a material that is seeing use for its excellent physical properties. Pure magnesium is much harder to utilize as it has a high flammability. So, the magnesium is alloyed with aluminum and a small amount of zinc to create a much more useful metal. “
Magnesium-matrix composites (MgMCs) are very promising as structural materials because of their low density, high specific strength, and excellent castability.” (Gupta, Xiang, 2016). Due to its lightweight, magnesium alloy has seen increasing use in the auto indrustry. “More recently, as a result of a general requirement for lighter weight automobiles to conserve energy, there has been a growing use of magnesium in the automotive field, principally as die castings.” (Savage 2008). Every pound is accounted for when manufacturing vehicles so a lighter alloy is usually welcome in the sector.
Savage, K. (2008). Magnesium and Magnesium Alloys (Vol. 15). ASM International. Xiang, C., & Gupta, N. (2016). Heat Treating of Magnesium Alloy Metal-Matrix Composites (G. E. Totten, Ed.; Vol. 4E). ASM International. 2.
For each source used in Question 1, briefly explain what the source is (handbook, corporate website, news article, etc.), who authored it (a journalist, researcher, institution/corporation), and why it’s a credible source. (15 pts)
Both sources referenced are ASM handbooks. ASM stands for the American Society for Metals. The ASM has been creating logs of key information and development
related to the use and manufacturing of metals since 1923. At the time known as the ASST or the American Society for Steel Treating.
Ken Savage is a researcher who works for Magnesium Elektron, also known as Luxfer MEL Technologies. A company that specializes in various magnesium alloys and
zirconium chemicals. They both produce magnesium alloys and manufacture finished parts.
Gupta is a professor and researcher at NYU. As well as this, he is an elected
official of ASM and IEEE. He has won several awards for his research and held several other potions. Unfortunately Xiang’s information isn’t as public. They are also listed as an employee of NYU, so one could assume they could be either a professor or an assistant to Gupta.
3.
Some metals are used in surgical implants. Go to the ASM Handbook
to find the tensile strength and yield strength of 316 Stainless Steel (annealed or cold worked). Provide the
answer and a citation. (15 pts)
The tensile strength of 316 stainless steel is 25 ksi and the yield strength is 173 mpa.
Mashl, S. J. (2015). Powder Metallurgy Processing by Hot Isostatic Pressing (P. Samal. J. Newkirk, Ed.; Vol. 7) [Review of Powder Metallurgy Processing by Hot Isostatic Pressing ]. ASM Handbook.
4.
Use ASTM Standards
(
ASTM alternate link
) to find the standard specification for acrylic bone cement, a biomaterial. In the standard, what are the requirements for powder liquid
mixture? Copy & paste the table here and provide a citation for it. (15 pts)
ASTM Standard F451-21, 2021, "Standard Specification for Acrylic Bone Cement" ASTM International, West Conshohocken, PA, https://compass.astm.org/document/?
contentCode=ASTM%7CF0451-21%7Cen-US

I need parts 8, 9, and 10 answered. Number 1 is an example of how it should be answered.
NOTE: Read the instructions, no where does it say any drawing is required. It is really frustrating when I wait all this time for an answer to a question and some tutor does even read the instructions and just declines it...its ridicilous.

I need parts 1, 2, and 3 answered pertaining to the print provided.
NOTE: If you refuse to answers all 3 parts and insist on wasting my question, then just leave it for someone else to answer. I've never had an issue until recently one single tutor just refuses to even read the instructions of the question and just denies it for a false reasons or drags on 1 part into multiple parts for no reason.
