1.3 Discussion Evolution of the
4th and 5th Axis
This week you learned that more complex CNC machines have the capability of executing additional rotary motions. These are sometimes called 4-axis or 5-axis machines.
In your original post
, answer the following:
Define the 4
th
and 5
th
axis of a CNC Machine.
What are they used for?
When, why, and how did the machines evolve from 3-axis to 4 & 5 axis?
What are the advantages of the 4
th
and 5
th
axis?
List a part that would be difficult to make without a 4
th
and/or 5
th
axis.
What is the impact on society of adding these additional axes?
In your responses to your classmates
, address the following:
Post replies in at least two other discussion threads. These replies should reflect genuine engagement and add value to the discussion. For example, ask questions, raise new issues, or give interpretations.
Ask them questions about how they arrived at their conclusion and how they researched the topic.
Replies should be more than “I agree with your post.” or “Nice job!”. These types of posts will not receive credit towards a discussion forum grade.

An articulated robot loads and unloads a CNC machine tool. The cell is scheduled to produce abatch of 300 parts. Setting up the cell for this part style takes 30 min, programming the robot takes75 min, and programming the CNC machine tool takes 55 min. For safety reasons, these threesetup activities must be done sequentially. The programmed machining cycle takes 3.75 min.Cutting tools wear out and must be periodically changed, which takes 6.0 min every 20 cycles andis performed by a human worker. At the end of each machining cycle, the robot reaches into themachine and removes the just-completed part, places it in a parts storage carousel, then reachesfor a starting work part from the same carousel and places it in the machine tool fixture. Thissequence of handling activities takes 45 sec. The storage carousel holds 25 parts. At the beginningof the production run, it is full of raw work parts. As each part is retrieved by the robot, the carouselindexes one position to present a new raw…

Grass is growing on a disk spinning at constant rate. What is the orientation of the stems?

Hello, I hope you can help me. I'm trying to create a device that has a spinning axle and I need to change the rotational force to be perpendicular to the axle. I know there are gears that can fit together have teeth, like the attached picture. I know there are other types of mechanisms, and some are more creative. But I also need for the solution to be low friction.
What are 2 low friction methods of changing the directional rotation of a power axle 90 degrees?
The entire creation is small, probably 12" x 12"
Thanks for your help.

A robot is used for loading and unloading of parts to automated flexible machines. Loading
time is 1 minute; unloading time is 1.5 minutes; machining time 15 minutes; Robot travel time
between the machines including the inspection time is 3 minutes. Cost of robot C,=30 TL/Hour;
cost of machines C2=40 TL/Hour. How many machines (integer number) should be assigned
to the robot so that the total robot and machine costs per cycle are minimized?
