Extra Credit Assignment, Non-Required Benjamin Britten The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra DUE Sunday, 10/8 at 11:59PM View Power Point #11 (Required). Listen to the first two minutes of the link on the last slide for Benjamin Britten’s The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra (only listen to the first 2 minutes- Theme) and answer the following questions: Name ________________ Panther ID __________ In just a few short sentences describe the timbre (musical color), dynamics (volume), and overall character of two of the six statements of the short, opening theme (2 minutes). How are the instruments used- which has the melody, the harmony? Listening to an excerpt from “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” – Benjamin Britten , I really liked both themes of the whole orchestra. These two parts are very dynamic, loud, and create a vibrant timbre. Especially for the final 6 th section. When the whole orchestra starts playing again, it kind of shows the full power of the play and performance. The melody is played for each instrument family in its own way, it is very harmonious to combine it - an indicator of the unity and fullness of the entire orchestra. The next section that I liked was the string section. I really enjoyed the transition from the Brass section to the String section. The Brass instruments smoothly and quietly finish their part, and the strings begin with the same bass notes, but at the same time, the tempo and mood of the melody have already changed to a faster and more energetic one. At the beginning, there is a "legato" - smooth play and bow movements. Then the intermittent, sharp, and loud "staccato" begins. And thus, very loudly and abruptly ending their part, the melody moves on to the next theme - Percussion. The stringed instruments are very warm and lyrical. It seems to me that the melody was mainly created by violins, they seemed to me the loudest. But at the moment with "Staccato", the cello was also clearly heard and involved. In overall, I was really pleased with the orchestra's performance as well. Benjamin Britten professionally demonstrates the distinctive timbres, dynamics, and responsibilities of many instrument families.
