LAB EQUIPMENT:
Oxygen System Components
LAB OBJECTIVES:
1.
The student will inspect, check, troubleshoot, service and repair aircraft oxygen systems
including demand-flow regulators.
LAB OVERVIEW:
This lab will give you an overview of aircraft oxygen systems.
These systems are often required
only for emergency situations and may go for long periods of time without use.
It is critical that
these systems be kept in proper working condition.
LAB PREPARATION:
1.
Read the ASA textbook reference listed above.
LAB PROCEDURES:
1.
Using the references listed above, answer the following questions. (60 min.)
A.
Describe a complete 100-hour inspection of an installed oxygen system.
B.
According to the Airframe textbook, what different types of oxygen cylinders are used in
aircraft? (Give a description of the different types of bottles including color.)
High (green) and low (red) pressure oxygen cylinders.
C.
What markings and identification numbers are required on oxygen bottles installed in
aircraft?
The specification number and the date of when the hydrostatic test was done
D.
How frequently are the different types of oxygen bottles required to be hydrostatically
tested?
What pressures are used for the different types of bottles?
E.
What is the life limit for oxygen bottles used in aircraft?
24 years
F.
According to AC65-15, what may be used to clean or flush oxygen systems?
A mixture of
chlorinated, fluorinated hydrocarbons.

G.
Give the procedures for purging oxygen systems.
When must this procedure be completed?
Fill and then drain the system, it should be done whenever there are suspected
contaminants in the system.
H.
Describe the correct method of charging an aircraft oxygen system using a servicing trailer
with multiple cylinders (cascade setup).
Why is this method more efficient?
I.
Utilizing both the ASA Airframe textbook and AC65-15, compile a list of at least six safety
precautions that should be observed when servicing oxygen systems.
No tools with oil or grease
Avoid servicing electrical wiring
No petroleum-based lubricants or oil-based fluids
No smoking

J.
According to the ASA Airframe text and AC665-15, what methods can be used to locate a
leak in an oxygen system?
Spray non petroleum-based soap and look for bubles
Why are oxygen system leaks critical?
It can lower the pressure
K.
Using the chart on page 676, determine the charging pressure of a DOT-3AA-1800 cylinder
if the ambient air temperature is 85
o
.
L.
What should be done with a cylinder that has been discharged for an undetermined amount
of time?
It shouldn’t be used
M.
Describe the operation of a chemical oxygen candle or oxygen generator.
Where are these
systems typically used?
It is used as an emergency backup in aircrafts, it supplies oxygen to
the system by using the candle.
2.
Inspect the oxygen system components provided. (50 min.)
A.
Determine airworthiness of each making a list of defects.
B.
Be prepared to describe the operation of continuous flow systems including regulators and
masks.
C.
Be prepared to describe the operation of demand type oxygen systems including pressure
demand and diluter demand regulators.
D.
Have instructor
over for a visit & sign-off.
LAB REPORT:
1.
Report the answers to the questions in step 1 above.
2.
Report list of defects found in step 2 above.

O GASES
Interconverting pressure and force
A chemistry graduate student is designing a pressure vessel for an experiment. The vessel will contain gases at pressures up to 470.0 MPa. The student's
design calls for an observation port on the side of the vessel (see diagram below). The bolts that hold the cover of this port onto the vessel can safely withstand
a force of 2.80 MN.

True Story! The 1998-1999 Mars Climate Orbiter mission was declared a total loss in1999 as there was a unit conversion mismatch error between Lockheed Martin and NASA. Themismatch was in the thruster force units. NASA used the SI system which called forNewton-Seconds (4.45 times as large) of thrust and Lockheed Martin used Pound-Force Seconds.Calculations placed the Orbiter at 68 miles from the surface as it went into orbit, but it waswithin 57 km of the surface after the breaking maneuver. Any distance from the surface lessthan 50 miles would have caused the Orbiter to crash.a. What was the actual distance of the Orbiter from the surface in miles?b. In percentage, how far off from the calculated 68 miles was the Orbiter?
