2-4 Journal: Starting Your Internship Southern New Hampshire University HIM 445 09/07/2023
What has been unexpected, and what has surprised you? One of the things that was unexpected I was supposed to shadow an employee that has been there for over 2 years. He was one of their top employees. I went a week earlier to introduce myself to the site manager and the employer who was planning on shadowing me. Just so that everyone has an idea of who I was and the reason for me being there. I started my internship on Aug 28, 2023, which was on a Monday. I went up there a week before and that was a Wednesday. The worker I was supposed to shadow had a medical problem over the weekend and ended up unable to come to work. The clinical manager and one of the company's owners let me observe their daily operations and ask questions. I considered it an incredible opportunity and a great learning opportunity to have been taught by those two people. What has been expected, and what has been in line with your previous experience? I ask the site manager this question because I was a little confused regarding this question. The site manager said he was expecting for me to ask questions and seemed interested in learning the in and outs of the job role. During my internship, I actively engaged in the learning process by posing inquiries related to the subject matter being imparted to me. Additionally, I took the initiative to create comprehensive notes for potential future utilization, whether it be in the event of my successful employment or for alternative professional opportunities. Some of my previous experience did come in to play with this intern. I used to work at an insurance company. One of the things I had to do was confirm the members by getting their names, dates of birth, and addresses. At the internship, I had to confirm the patients by name.
What was your most meaningful interaction with the EHR system at your internship site? The most meaningful interaction with the EHR system was when there was a new patient coming to get physical therapy done. I had to give the patient the intake form and have the patient fill it out, I had to collect the patient's drive's license, and insurance card or any other insurance for example the VA insurance. The meaningful interaction was creating a new patient case. Entering the patient information into the EHR and then scanning those documents into the EHR system. What, if any, problems do you see with the EHR at your internship site, or what concerns do you have about them? One issue that was observed with the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system is the scheduling of patients. In the event that a patient needs to reschedule their appointment. I will need to cancel the scheduled appointment and afterward schedule a new appointment to be made. Instead of just having the option to reschedule the appointment. There was only check-in, check-out, create, and delete. There was no option to reschedule. What have you learned from your EHR Go assignments related to best practices using EHR systems I found it was easy to maneuver through the EHR system at the internship because I had gained experience using the EHR GO. Currently, the task for the previous week has not been integrated into the knowledge and skills I have acquired during the internship. I am really anticipating the upcoming weeks to observe the practical use of the information obtained through the EHR Go assignment in the context of this internship.
