AUTO 132 — Lesson 07 Engine Lubrication System Operation Worksheet Using the information in the PowerPoint presentation for Lesson ##, as well as the animations available at VirtualVehicleMD.com , answer the following questions in your own words as much as possible. Your Name: 1. Why is oil an ideal fluid to provide lubrication for moving parts within the engine? It doesn’t compress which parts means it can protect metal parts by forming barriers around them 2. A car had its timing cover removed as part of a repair. Upon completion of the repair the car suffers from low oil pressure. What issue might be causing this? The o rings on the oil pump by be messed up 3. What is an oil gallery? What does it contribute to the proper function of an engine? An oil gallery is the passageway through which oil travels on its way to components of the engine. The oil gallery delivers oil to the crank, heads/valvetrain, etc without them, the motor would seize 4. What are oil jets? How do they contribute to the proper function of an engine? Oil jets are basically oil fountains that spray oil on the cylinder walls and crankshaft. They are in the crankcase. Without them, the motor would seize. 5. How does an oil jet assembly ensure that some oil stays in the cylinders when the engine is not running?
6. If an oil filter becomes clogged will the engine suffer damage from lack of lubrication? Why or why not? Whenever the engine is turning over, oil is being sprayed on the cylinder’s, even when the motor isn’t firing. 7. Why would it be desirable for oil to be have lower viscosity when cold, but higher viscosity when hot? It anything, it will suffer from contamination. When a filter is clogged, oil will travel through the bypass valves so that it does seize 8. A car has bluish smoke emitting from the tailpipe during operation. What does this indicate? So that you don’t have to change your oil in the winter for a thinner oil and put in a think oil in the summer. It also performs well. In all seasons 9. When inspecting the engine bay of a car, a technician discovers oil burned onto the exhaust manifold. What is the probable location of the oil leak? Valve cover or oil fill 10. What damage can result from low oil levels? Damage can occur to the main, crank and bearings. Can occur to the main, crank and cam bearing As well as other components 11. A car owner discovers oil on the ground where his/her car was parked. The oil appears to have leaked from the front of the engine. Which components could be the source of the leak? The oil pump or oil filter or maybe even the oil pan gasket
12. Why is it usually labor intensive to fix a leak from the rear main seal? The oil pan needs to be removed to be access the rear main seal. In most modern vehicles, the subframe needs to access oil pan. It is a big job
