A group of space pirates are gearing up for battle that will take place in a space desert, away from any planets. You are joining them.
The pirates have three types of weapons and want to ensure that they know how to use them properly. They've already done some testing, and found that the weapons fire successfully in space.
The plan of attack is for each pirate to securely affix a personal thruster to their body while tightly gripping their weapon. Immediately after a pirate fires their weapon, their personal thruster turns on to compensate for the weapon's recoil. The thruster then continues to accelerate. This allows the pirates to pursue the frenemies that they fired at.
Your personal weapon and thruster will be assigned to you using email address that you have on file with Office of the Registrar. If you do not receive your weapon and thruster assignments, please contact your lab instructor.
Here's some Maybe Useful Information about Space Pirates.
Big Question: How long should you fire your personal thruster in order to overcompensate for your weapon's recoil and achieve a final velocity of 1/10 (i.e. 10%) of the ammo velocity?
Your task is to answer the Big Question in the form of an argument using the Claim, Evidence, Reasoning framework. To do this, you will need to model the firing of the ammo from your assigned weapon, and then model the combined motion of your thruster + body (they're a connected pair) to come up with a quantitative prediction of how long the thruster must fire in order to pursue your frenemy at the desired speed.
