1 Code of Ethics Report Southern New Hampshire University EMA-600-X3299 Intro to Engineer-Engineer Mgr 21TW3 February 28, 2021
2 Code of Ethics Report Engineering The three organizations discuss the responsibilities their members have to their engineering profession. The ASCE states that its members must commit to sustainable development principles and comply with all legal requirements in the jurisdiction where they practice. (ASCE, 2020). ASME members should work toward increasing the prestige and competence of their profession. They should also consider the impact of their designs on the environment. They should use their knowledge and skill to enhance human welfare. (ASME, 2012). NSPE tells its members to perform services only when qualified by their education or experience and in their technical competence areas. (Code of Ethics, 2019). Society The three organizations discuss the responsibilities their members have to the public and society. The ASCE states that its members must protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public and use their knowledge and skills to enhance humanity's quality of life. Their members must consider the current and future needs of society. Members are to treat everyone with dignity and fairness (ASCE, 2020). The ASME instructs its members to have as their top priority the public's safety,
3 health, and welfare. (ASME, 2012). The NSPE offers similar wording in its ethics statement: members should have as their top priority the public's safety, health, and welfare. They should treat everyone with dignity and fairness without discrimination. (Code of Ethics, 2019). Business The three organizations discuss the responsibilities their members have to the business side of their profession. The ASCE states that their members should truthfully represent their professional qualifications and experience. They must have zero tolerance for bribery, fraud, and corruption in their business dealings. (ASCE, 2020). The ASME offers similar wording in its ethics statement. Members should act as faithful agents in all professional matters, including proprietary information and intellectual property rights. (ASME, 2012). NSPE states a consistent wording as the previous ethics statements: members should act as faithful agents for any employers. (Code of Ethics, 2019).
