Juarez/ftt111/pg.1 Moises Juarez 09/10/2023 Ftt 111/troubleshooting: FTT 111 WEEK 4 TROUBLESHOOTING SCENARIOS Purpose: This assignment is designed to help you contextualize the overarching concepts discussed in the course text by cross- referencing them to examples of existing firearms. As you progress through the assignment, you’ll also progress through the thought- process of diagnosing and repairing malfunctions, as well as predicting the need for certain preventative maintenance. Troubleshooting is a process of asking or investigating, and answering, a series of increasingly detailed questions to arrive at the cause of a malfunction. This worksheet will “walk you through” the investigation required to troubleshoot a firearm. As you move on to more advanced concepts in later weeks, you will begin generating and predicting the questions you need to answer to diagnose a malfunction. Instructions: In Part 1, you’ll answer several questions to demonstrate declarative knowledge of key principles related to troubleshooting revolvers as well as firearms in general. This section will be critical to your ability to complete future assignments in this course, so take your time and thoroughly research and study the answers. In Parts 2 – 3, read each situation and answer the questions in the space provided. Many of the prompts will build on the previous ones, so please do Juarez/ftt111/pg.2
not read ahead on this assignment. Answer one part of the assignment at a time, before reviewing the subsequent prompts. Part 1. Please answer the following questions. 1. In a revolver, single action and double action, what are some common methods for clearing the feed source? How might you verify the barrel is free of obstructions? a) Ensure that the firearm is pointed in a safe direction. b) Open the cylinder by pressing the cylinder release latch and swinging the cylinder out. c) Visually inspect each chamber to ensure they are empty. d) If any rounds are present, remove them by pushing the extractor rod or using a suitable tool. e) With the cylinder still open, visually inspect the barrel for any obstructions. f) a obstruction is found, use a cleaning rod or appropriate tool to clear it. g) . Once all chambers and the barrel are clear, close the cylinder and proceed with further troubleshooting. 2. Are there any tests or checks that you would consider essential to perform on a revolver prior to returning it to the customer? Why? . Prior to returning a revolver to the customer, there are several essential tests and checks that should be performed. These tests and checks ensure the functionality, safety, and reliability of the revolver. Firstly, a visual inspection should be conducted to check for any visible damage or wear on the firearm. This includes examining the barrel, cylinder, frame, and other components for any signs of cracks, dents, or corrosion. Secondly, the cylinder should be rotated, ensuring that it moves smoothly and locks securely into place. This is crucial for proper alignment and indexing of the chambered rounds. Additionally, the cylinder release mechanism should be tested to ensure its effectiveness in releasing and locking the cylinder. Juarez/ftt111/pg.3
Thirdly, the trigger pull should be assessed to ensure it functions smoothly and consistently. This involves measuring the weight of the trigger pull and checking for any grittiness or excessive creep. This test is particularly important as it directly affects the accuracy and control of the revolver. Lastly, a function test should be conducted by dry-firing the revolver. This allows us to check the hammer and firing pin mechanism, ensuring that they function correctly without any misfires or malfunctions. Performing these tests and checks before returning a revolver to the customer is essential to guarantee their safety and satisfaction with the firearm. It ensures that the revolver is in proper working condition and minimizes the risk of any potential issues or accidents. 3. In general, what components are different in the fire control group between a single action and double action revolver? The fire control group in a single action revolver differs from that of a double action revolver in terms of the mechanism and operation. In a single action revolver, the trigger performs a single function, which is to release the hammer. The hammer must be manually cocked before each shot, and pulling the trigger simply releases the hammer to strike the firing pin, initiating the firing sequence. This allows for a lighter and crisper trigger pull, resulting in greater accuracy. On the other hand, in a double action revolver, the trigger performs two functions. It not only cocks the hammer but also releases it to strike the firing pin. This means that the revolver can be fired by either manually cocking the hammer or by simply pulling the trigger. The double action trigger pull tends to be longer and heavier compared to a single action revolver, as it performs both functions in a single motion. 4. What is a single action only revolver? What visual clues might you have with this type of action? A single action only revolver refers to a firearm that can only be fired when the hammer is manually cocked before each shot. This means that pulling the trigger in a single action only revolver will not cock the hammer or initiate the firing sequence. Visual clues that indicate a single action only revolver include a Juarez/ftt111/pg.4

hammer that must be manually pulled back to cock it before firing. Additionally, the absence of a spur or extension on the hammer indicates that it is designed for single action operation only. 5. What is a double action only revolver? What visual clues might you have with this type of action? A double action only revolver is a firearm that can only be fired by pulling the trigger, without the option of manually cocking the hammer. In this type of revolver, pulling the trigger performs both the cocking and releasing functions, causing the hammer to strike the firing pin. Visual clues that indicate a double action only revolver include a hammer that is fully enclosed within the frame and lacks any external means of manual cocking. The absence of a hammer spur or extension is also a visual clue. 6. What is a transfer bar and what should it do in a properly functioning firearm when you slowly cock the hammer and press the trigger? A transfer bar is a safety mechanism found in many modern revolvers. It is a small metal bar that moves between the hammer and firing pin, only allowing the firing pin to strike the primer when the trigger is pulled. When the hammer is slowly cocked and the trigger is pressed, the transfer bar moves into position, creating a direct connection between the trigger and the firing pin. In a properly functioning firearm, the transfer bar ensures that the revolver can only discharge when the trigger is intentionally pulled, preventing unintentional discharges if the hammer is struck or dropped. 7. What is a hammer block safety and how does this differ from a transfer bar? A hammer block safety is another safety mechanism commonly found in revolvers. It works by physically blocking the hammer from contacting the firing pin until the trigger is pulled. Unlike a transfer bar, which creates a direct connection between the trigger and firing pin, a hammer block safety physically prevents the hammer from striking the firing pin. This differs from a transfer bar in that it does not rely on the movement of any internal components when the hammer is cocked. Instead, it provides an additional layer of safety by Juarez/ftt111/pg.5
mechanically blocking the hammer's movement until the trigger is properly engaged. 8. What is “Cylinder Gap” and what potential negative safety and functionality implications does it have? When would it pose these problems/dangers? This gap is present to allow the cylinder to rotate freely and align with the barrel when the firearm is fired. However, excessive cylinder gap can have negative safety and functionality implications. One potential safety implication is that excessive cylinder gap can result in gas and debris escaping from the cylinder during firing. This can create a dangerous situation for the shooter, as the escaping gas can cause injury or damage to surrounding objects. From a functionality perspective, excessive cylinder gap can lead to a decrease in overall accuracy and performance of the revolver. It can cause gas leakage, resulting in a loss of muzzle velocity and potentially affecting the bullet's trajectory. Additionally, excessive cylinder gap can contribute to increased fouling and carbon buildup, which can lead to reliability issues and difficulty in extracting spent casings. The potential problems and dangers associated with excessive cylinder gap are most likely to occur in older or heavily used revolvers where wear and tear have taken a toll on the firearm's components. Regular maintenance and inspection of the revolver, including checking and adjusting the cylinder gap if necessary, are important to ensure optimal safety and functionality. Part 2.
Juarez/ftt111/pg.6 The customer brings you a Ruger® New Model Blackhawk®and claims that it doesn’t fire when he pulls the trigger. He says that the hammer seems to be working; it locks back, and it falls when he pulls the trigger. Please answer the following questions: 1. How would you safely clear the chambers and barrel of ammunition and potential obstructions? a. Ensure that the firearm is pointed in a safe direction. b. Open the loading gate located on the right side of the frame. c. Visually inspect each chamber to ensure it is empty. d. If any rounds are present, remove them by pushing the ejector rod located under the barrel. e. Close the loading gate. 2. Based on the model of revolver, is it ☐ single action, ☐double action, or ☐ double action only? Based on the model of the revolver, the Ruger New Model Blackhawk can be both single action and double action. It has a traditional single-action mechanism, but it also features a transfer bar system that allows it to be fired in double action. 3. Does this revolver have a transfer bar? Yes, the Ruger New Model Blackhawk is equipped with a transfer bar. The transfer bar is a safety feature that prevents the hammer from striking the firing pin unless the trigger is fully pulled to the rear. 4. Is a “light strike” a potential cause of this malfunction? What failure type is a “light strike” (i.e. failure to…)? A "light strike" can be a potential cause of the malfunction. A light strike refers to the hammer striking the firing pin with insufficient force to ignite the primer. This can result in a failure to fire. To detect a light strike, examine the primer on the unfired round. If there is a shallow or faint indentation, it indicates a light strike. Juarez/ftt111/pg.7 5. How you might detect a “light strike”?

To detect a light strike, examine the primer on the unfired round. If there is a shallow or faint indentation, it indicates a light strike. 6. What are some of the components that you might suspect if the transfer bar is not functioning properly? If the transfer bar is not functioning properly, some components that you might suspect include: - Transfer bar itself: Check for any visible damage or misalignment. - Hammer: Inspect the hammer for any signs of wear or damage that could interfere with its interaction with the transfer bar. 7. What are some of the components that you might suspect may cause a failure to fire in this type of revolver? In this type of revolver, several components may cause a failure to fire, including: - Firing pin: If the firing pin is worn, damaged, or dirty, it may not strike the primer with sufficient force. - Hammer spring: A weak or worn hammer spring can result in insufficient force to strike the firing pin effectively. - Cylinder stop: If the cylinder stop is not engaging properly, it may prevent the revolver from indexing correctly, leading to a failure to fire. Part 3. The customer brings you a Colt® Python® and explains that the hammer will not reach full cock and falls prematurely. Please answer the following questions: 1. How would you safely clear the chambers and barrel of ammunition and potential obstructions? a. Ensure that the firearm is pointed in a safe direction. b. Open the cylinder by pressing the cylinder release latch and swinging the cylinder out. c. Visually inspect each chamber to ensure they are empty. d. If any rounds are present, remove them by pushing the extractor rod or using a suitable tool. Juarez/ftt111/pg.8 e. With the cylinder still open, visually inspect the barrel for any obstructions. f. If an obstruction is found, use a cleaning rod or appropriate tool to clear it. g. Once all chambers and the barrel are clear, close the cylinder and proceed with further troubleshooting.
2. Based on the model of revolver, is it ☐ single action, ☐double action, or ☐ double action only? Based on the model of the revolver, the Colt Python is a double action/single action revolver. This means it can be fired either by manually cocking the hammer for single-action shooting or by pulling the trigger for double-action shooting. Juarez/ftt111/pg.3 3. Based on the observation that the hammer does not reach full cock, what part is the likely cause of the failure, according to the course text? Based on the observation that the hammer does not reach full cock, according to the course text, the likely cause of the failure is the sear surfaces. The sear surfaces are responsible for engaging and holding the hammer in the cocked position before it is released to strike the firing pin. 4. Assuming your answer to question three were the cause of the malfunction, in a short customer summary, describe the type of failure, what components caused the malfunction, the components you removed/replaced, and the tests that were performed to verify operation: The Colt Python brought in by the customer was experiencing a failure where the hammer would not reach full cock and fall prematurely. After careful examination, it was determined that the sear surfaces were likely causing this malfunction. To resolve the issue, the sear surfaces were inspected for wear or damage. If necessary, they were smoothed or replaced. Additionally, the trigger assembly was examined to ensure proper functioning. After the repair, extensive testing was conducted to ensure that the hammer reached full cock and functioned reliably before returning the firearm to the customer.
