Activities 1–3: Questions
1.
In Activity 1, which way did the blue marble travel when the cup was removed?
It traveled in a straight line from the point where I lifted the cup up. 2.
You spun a bobber with a mass of 1 washers in the plastic bag, and one with a mass of 4 washers
in the plastic bag. How does the velocity of the 1-washer bobber compare with the velocity of the 4-
washer bobber? Describe the relationship between the mass of the cylinder with the washers and the velocity of the bobber. The 1 washer bag velocity compares to the 4 washer velocity in that the 1 washers velocity was 2.85m/s and the 4 washers was 5.88m/s. A 48..5% difference. The greater the mass the higher the velocity needed to be to not weight the bag down while spinning it. 3.
What do you notice about the relationship between the centripetal force and the weight of the bag of washers? Explain the reason for this relationship.
The centripetal force was affected by the weight of the bag in that the greater the weight the grteater the centripetal force. Centripetal force is the force that keeps something in a circular path so the greater
the mass the more force is required to keep it moving. 4.
How will centripetal force be affected if you double the velocity at which you spin the bobber? The centripetal force would increase if I doubled the velocity. For example the bag with one washer its centripetal force was 0.24 with the calculated velocity, if I doubled that velocity its new centripetal force would be 0.94. It more than tripled the centripetal force. 5.
What would you expect to happen to the velocity of the bobber if the mass of the washers in the bag remained the same and the radius was doubled? If we kept the mass of washers constant and doubled the radius we could expect the velocity to decrease. The centripetal force is inversely proportional to the radius, meaning the mass*v^2 is divided by the radius. The decrease would result because less centripetal force would be needed to move the object in its circular motion.

Analysis and Interpretation of vertical Ground Reaction Forces. In this study, a volunteer was asked to walk on two force platforms under two different conditions. Condition 1- Normal Walk (NW), condition 2 - walking over an obstacle (ObsW). The right limb was the one to step on platform 1 in both conditions. The force platforms were used to measure the vertical ground reaction forces on the right limb. Data was collected on Vicon (Nexus) software and the attached graphs ( mean NW/ObsW, Mean (+-)1SD NW/ObsW) were created. Analyse ,Interpret the graphs and make a conclusion of the result attached.

Part 2
Set up a spreadsheet solution to this problem. This will require that you derive one
formula to express the relationship between the friction coefficient, the spring constant,
and the spring compression; and a second formula to find the cost of using different slide
and spring types. Set up your spreadsheet as shown below. You can fill in the
"Acceptable?" column manually, rather than using a formula. Turn in a copy of your
spreadsheet/Matlab work

replaced by a drop box. After leaving the slide, the blocks will travel 5 horizontal feet
through the air and pass through a hole into the drop box. Using the slide you selected

Interconverting pressure and force
A chemistry graduate student is designing a pressure vessel for an experiment. The vessel will contain gases at pressures up to 470.0 MPa. The student's
design calls for an observation port on the side of the vessel (see diagram below). The bolts that hold the cover of this port onto the vessel can safely withstand
a force of 2.80 MN.

The moment of inertia of a helicopter's rotor is 320kg. m². The rotor starts from rest
and at t = 0, the pilot begins by advancing the throttle so that the torque exerted on
the rotor by the engine (in N.m) is modelled by as a function of time (in seconds) by
T = 250t.
a) How long does it take the rotor to turn ten revolutions?
b) What is the rotor's angular velocity (in RPM) when it has turned ten

Question 5
The exercise machine is designed with a lightweight cart which is mounted on small rollers so that it
is free to move along the inclined ramp. Two cables are attached to the cart-one for each hand. If
the hands are together so that the cables are parallel and if each cable lies essentially in a vertical
plane, determine the force P which each hand must exert on its cable in order to maintain an
equilibrium position. The mass of the person is 70 kg, the ramp angle theta is 15 degrees, and the
angle beta is 18 degrees. In addition, calculate the force R which the ramp exerts on the cart.
