Clinical Field Experience B: Identifying Student Challenges
Alaijha Trim GCU: SPD 570
Dr. Campbell May 31, 2023
Part 1: Student Challenges During my observation in 2nd grade math, I encountered a group of students who struggled with
their knowledge of multiple math problems. My mentor, Ms. Atkins, helped them by breaking down the steps into manageable pieces. The pupils were divided into small groups to solve math problems. The mentor teacher, Ms. Atkins, ensured that the students followed the instructions given. She instructed the
students to explain the various steps they had to follow in order to get the right answer. They were then encouraged to continue working on the remaining parts of the task. After they had completed the assignments, the teacher complimented them on their hard work. Also, she stated that math was like a jigsaw puzzle, which helped students know that they were on track to complete the tasks. By practicing and maintaining consistency, they would be able to improve their skills and complete more challenging activities without getting stuck. The small group was able to help students grasp the lesson, and it motivated them to complete the task. I was able to observe that they were more confident in their ability to finish the assignment.
Part 2: Reflection With a deep understanding of the students' needs and academic capabilities, the general education teacher, Ms. Jones was able to create a personalized lesson plan that suited the students' needs. She also communicated with them directly and provided them with the necessary assistance. Through exit tickets, the mentor teacher was able to evaluate their progress.
The exit tickets were used by the mentor teacher to assess the students' knowledge of the material and determine their individual needs. They also provided a checkpoint that allowed the teacher to identify the students' special needs and academic capabilities.
The students were well-equipped to understand the lesson's goals. The mentor teacher then reviewed their previous lessons to help them learn the objectives of the assignment. Throughout the course, the students were able to navigate through the exit ticket and the
various steps required to complete the task.
I will continue to meet the needs of my students as I teach. Working with Ms. Jones and her pupils was a great opportunity. I learned a lot about planning ahead and
developing lessons that accommodate the varying needs of each student. Focused on the task's goals, I encountered a challenge that required me to break down the multiple tasks into distinct steps. My next objective is to instruct them how to complete the entire assignment without breaking it down into multiple steps, which will require proper planning and resources. The scholars were preparing to transition from 2
nd
grade math to 3
rd
grade math and the teacher made sure to meet the needs of the students.
