Questions 1. What forms of bias, if any, did you witness of Paul and/or Robert during the interviews? /5 Paul showed bias towards Sonya due to finding her attractive. While he made several comments that suggested this, he insisted he did not want to hire her due to this reason. Paul could have had an unconscious bias towards Sonya. Robert showed a bias towards Jacqueline due to the way he believed she could contribute to diversity within the company. He confirmed that this had an impact on his decision to hire her however, there were many other factors he considered as well. Paul was not nearly as warm with Jacqueline during her interview as he was with Sonya and was probing her to say something negative about herself when asking how not being a team played would manifest itself in her actions Fanshawe Policy 2-G-04 applies to this assignment
(defensive, argumentative). This could be Paul’s bias towards Sonya being displayed again. 2. Identify any comments or questions posed during the interviews that you would categorize as inappropriate. /5 Paul made several borderline inappropriate comments during Sonya’s interview. Most noticeable was that he asked her if she had a boyfriend at two separate points of the interview. This had no relevance to the position she was interviewing for. Paul also commented on how she does not strike him as the type to be intimated easily and has self- confidence, despite just meeting her. In Jacqueline’s interview, Robert questioned why she is leaving her current job. While this comment is not as inappropriate as Paul’s to Sonya, this can be a sensitive topic for candidates who are still currently employed elsewhere. Robert continued to inform Jacqueline they have had an increasing number of Hispanic and African American clients within their base. This comment implied that her ethnicity could possibly have an impact on her application and could be seen as inappropriate. 3. Who do you side with, Robert or Paul? Please provide your reasoning, while also indicating whether you would hire Sonya or Jacqueline. /5 While I do believe that diversity management is important in organizations, it seemed as though Robert was interested in hiring Jacqueline based only on that factor. Robert went on to discuss how there is not one person on Paul’s team that is not Caucasian, further indicating how Jacqueline would contribute to the diversity of the company. Robert also made comments stating that Jacqueline is the better candidate due to her marital status. Jacqueline did not share her marital status due to it being asked explicitly however, Sonya did. As the unsuccessful applicant, Sonya could even try and state her rejection was partially due to discrimination. While I do find that Robert is not considering all factors and disagree with Paul’s inappropriate behaviour, I would hire Sonya. Sonya was able to draw on her mistakes to describe how these provided learning opportunities for her and helped her grow professionally. Jacqueline effectively answered the questions although seemed to find ways to make her weaknesses still seem like positive attributes. Jacqueline picked up on Robert’s comments regarding diversity and used this as an advantage, stating she would help the marketing for the new Hispanic and African American clients in the company’s base. Robert did not spend much time discussing the candidates with Paul before making the final decision, even though Paul was not in agreeance. Fanshawe Policy 2-G-04 applies to this assignment
