1 Personal Mastery Reflection Hallie Bendel 001251020 Western Governors University Leading with Personal Mastery – D155 Donna Austgen 12-30-2023
2 Personal Mastery Reflection Task 1 gave me a solid foundation of emotional and power skills to help me become a successful leader. Task 1 was challenging because it forced me to think as a leader instead of a staff member. In doing so, I began to hone in on my strengths, understand my weaknesses, and have a better appreciation for decisions that my mentors, managers, and directors have made in the past. For the assignment, we needed to utilize one power skill per scenario. Developing scenarios that focused on one power skill over the other was challenging. Most of the scenarios could have used more than one power skill to address the situation. What I learned from this task how to dive deep into each scenario, focus on the main problem, identify the opportunity, and then choose which power skill I want to utilize. Although one power skill may be more appropriate for a specific situation, more than one can be applied. I also learned that it is vital to have excellent interpersonal communication to be a successful leader. Face-to-face communication was appropriate for all of my scenarios. Interpersonal communication is essential for developing active listening skills, creating a positive work environment, and building solid relationships are essential (Mahoney, 2023). In my scenarios, face-to-face communication allowed me to show that I was actively listening, providing real-time feedback, and working together on a resolution. This communication type is best for building long, trusting relationships with staff.  The strengths I used in the scenarios were self-awareness, time management, compassion, adaptability, and responsibility to others. Self-awareness was one of my strengths that boosted my confidence in becoming a successful leader. Self-awareness is not an easy task and, at times, uncomfortable; however, it is a necessity in all aspects of personal and professional life. I felt that self-awareness could have been utilized in each of the scenarios. As their nurse manager, I
3 needed to understand my emotions, strengths, weaknesses, and beliefs to be a strong leader for them . Self-awareness is an ongoing process of evaluating one's traits, emotions, beliefs, and pre- conceived ideas (Younas et al., 2020). The article by Younas intrigued me because I never considered self-awareness an ongoing process. As a leader, I will need to reflect on myself before addressing situations. My perceptions of the different scenarios and how I react to them may change. Scenario 1 is the scenario in which I had to utilize self-awareness. In this scenario, Marissa was given a patient assignment that she did not want to take due to her beliefs. As nurses, we need to care for any patient that needs care, regardless of our beliefs. I needed to become self-aware of my beliefs to address the situation. I may not agree with the patient's choices or with Marissa; however, my job is to ensure our patients receive quality care. Becoming self-aware in this situation allowed me to have a face-to-face discussion with Marissa, guiding and encouraging her to become self-aware and mindful of other people's choices.      Effective and efficient leadership creates trust, which enables leaders to delegate more to employees and create an environment where employees feel valued (Bake, 2019). As I went through this course, this sentence hit home to me. My leadership style will significantly impact the success of the department, organization, and patient outcomes. The path toward developing my personal mastery has helped me understand the variety of leadership styles, which leadership style I thought I possessed, and which styles I know are not a good fit for me. The exercises and videos throughout the course were very interesting, especially the 'What's Your Leadership Style' online quiz. I thought these questions were important regarding how you engage with staff and handle the workload. My leadership style was unsurprising after taking the quiz and reviewing my results. I lean toward the democratic leadership style. I want my staff to provide me with their input in decision-making so I can include them in the process and consider what is
