THE THREE KEY FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO EXCELLENCE IN PENAL MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP ARE: 1. ORGANIZATIONAL THEORY 2. CORRECTIONAL MODELS OF MANAGEMENT 3. LEADERSHIP AND INNOVATION
Organizational Theory Organizational theory is how the authority of an institution’s management can aid in the success of that organization. Organizational theory outlines how authority is broken down within an organization and how this breakdown can make an organization more effective. Organizational theory can be used to explain how individuals, groups, and subgroups interact with each other within an institution. Businessmen James Mooney and Alan Reiley identified these four principles of structure for an organization. Unity of command: hierarchy of leaders Scalar principle: an outline of responsibilities. Separations among departments: outline of division roles Relationship line and staff roles: The flow of control and accountability.

Bureaucratic Model: In this model decisions are made within a small group, not just one person. Participative Model: This model is open and democratic. Prison staff has an input on decisions. The authoritarian and bureaucratic models are most often used in correctional facilities. Some institutions use the bureaucratic model but add some of the elements from the Correctional Models of Management

Prison administrators and leaders should be motivated, humanistic, energetic, and innovative. Leadership should be well versed in relating to their staff and in motivating staff to be their best while working in the facility. Management should be able to collaborate with external groups like courts, the public, Leadership and Innovation
