Western Governors University Henry Santana Student ID: 011308113 D253 - TASK 1: Becoming an Effective Values-Based Leader (Part 2) C1. Two Leadership Challenges Pertinent to Ethics and Values I Might Encounter as the Recently Appointed Customer Service Manager at Corollary Marketing Regarding the Choice and Declaration of the New Team Lead: Handling conflicts and avoiding favoritism pose potential challenges relevant to ethics and values in selecting and announcing the new team lead. Conflict resolution is crucial as employees may encounter workplace issues, whether stemming from not being chosen as the team lead, facing challenges in project collaborations, feeling stuck on a project, or experiencing general work-related stress. As the newly appointed customer service manager at Corollary Marketing, guiding my team through these challenges is a task that requires understanding and assistance to help them overcome these inevitable obstacles. On the topic of favoritism, having a close friend as a candidate for the team lead role introduces the risk of bias. It is imperative to ensure that my decision is based on merit rather than personal preferences. Choosing someone simply because of personal liking could lead to team conflict, as it would be evident that favoritism influenced the decision-making process. In such a scenario, rectifying the conflict arising from playing favorites would be a complex and challenging task, causing potential complications and headaches. C2. Utilizing Two of My Primary Values and Two of the Company’s Values in a Discussion Regarding the Hiring Decision with the Individual Not Chosen as the Team Lead: In the discussion with the individual not chosen for the team lead position, I will outline the approach I took in making the hiring decision. I will convey that while I acknowledged potential in all candidates, the final choice was determined through values mapping. Commencing the conversation, I will highlight the company's fundamental values, placing special emphasis on excellence and integrity. I will clarify that values mapping was instrumental in ensuring the selection of the most suitable candidate for the role. Continuing the dialogue, I will elaborate that, guided by my values of transparency and allegiance, I prioritize individuals who consistently demonstrate integrity and excellence in their interactions, reflecting my commitment to transparent communication within the team.
Additionally, I value commitment to the company over a propensity to leave when presented with alternative opportunities.
