Leadership Style Summary Ashley N. Johnson University of Phoenix MPA/534 Peter Reeves November 14, 2023
Introduction Situational Leadership is a flexible, adaptable style of leadership that determines whether a leader is more directive or supportive based on their followers’ individualized needs. For instance, business owners, executives, and managers who practice this type of leadership shift their management style based on a person’s development (Baker, 2022). The purpose of this executive brief is to furnish the hiring committee with a thorough outline of situational leadership, its fundamental concepts, and its influence on the achievement of organizational objectives. Summary To commence, situational leadership posits that a universal leadership strategy does not exist. In order to effectively lead, it is imperative for leaders to demonstrate adaptability and modify their leadership approach in accordance with the proficiency and dedication exhibited by their subordinates. The theoretical framework posits four distinct leadership styles, including directing, mentoring, supporting, and delegating. The various styles are influenced by the level of development exhibited by the followers, which may be assessed through two dimensions: competence and dedication. In the realm of directing, leaders exhibit a directing style characterized by the provision of explicit instructions and the tight supervision of their subordinates. Leaders need to consider the relationship between the leaders and the members of the group. Social and interpersonal factors can play a role in determining which approach is best (Kendra Cherry, 2023). This
particular approach is well-suited for persons who exhibit lower levels of skill and devotion. As the followers acquire further information and abilities, leaders have the opportunity to adopt the coaching approach, wherein they maintain their role as providers of guidance and support, while also fostering an environment that encourages followers to assume greater responsibility. This approach demonstrates efficacy for individuals who possess limited to moderate proficiency but exhibit low levels of dedication. As individuals progress in their proficiency and dedication, leaders have the opportunity to embrace the supporting leadership style. In this context, leaders adopt a more hands-off approach, granting followers increased autonomy in decision-making processes. This particular style is deemed suitable for persons who possess a moderate to high level of proficiency and exhibit varying levels of devotion. Ultimately, within the delegating leadership style, leaders offer limited guidance and grant followers the autonomy to independently make judgments. This particular style is deemed appropriate for persons who possess a high level of proficiency and have a strong commitment. The efficacy of situational leadership is in its capacity to align leadership style with the developmental stage of followers. Through this approach, leaders have the ability to optimize the potential and performance of their followers. Moreover, the implementation of situational leadership theory cultivates a conducive work milieu through the cultivation of trust, empowerment, and open channels of communication between leaders and their subordinates.

Consequently, this leads to an improvement in employee motivation, work satisfaction, and eventually the overall performance of the firm. One of the primary benefits associated with situational leadership is in its inherent flexibility. Leaders possess the capacity to readily modify their leadership approach in response to the evolving requirements and conditions of their subordinates. This fosters the development of agility and responsiveness, both of which are essential in the contemporary and ever-changing business environment. Furthermore, situational leadership theory advocates for leaders to dedicate their time and energy towards comprehending the requirements, capabilities, and weaknesses of their followers. Through this action, leaders have the ability to customize their approach and offer the essential assistance required for the achievement of their followers. It is imperative to acknowledge that the use of situational leadership is not devoid of inherent difficulties. Leaders must exhibit robust interpersonal skills in order to accurately evaluate the developmental level of their followers and adapt their leadership style accordingly. Moreover, it is imperative for leaders to demonstrate a willingness to relinquish control and place faith in their subordinates to exercise their decision-making abilities. This can provide a challenge for certain leaders who are accustomed to exercising authority.
Conclusion In summary, situational leadership is a significant leadership philosophy that underscores the significance of modifying leadership style in accordance with the particular circumstances. It is an effective leadership framework as it adapts to the situation and the needs of all team members. It builds strong relationships between the leaders and their teams as it requires close communication between them. Situational leadership can prepare leaders to stay abreast of changes, effectively tackle problems, and set up their team and business for success (Ramakrishnan, 2023). Leaders can optimize their potential and improve organizational success by aligning their leadership style with the developmental level of their followers. The concept of situational leadership is centered around the promotion of flexibility, trust, and open communication within an organizational context. By cultivating these qualities, a pleasant work environment is created, which in turn enhances employee motivation and job satisfaction. Although situational leadership may pose certain difficulties, it also provides substantial advantages for both individuals and companies.
