Question:
Ethical question: Is it ok for Facebook to exploit their user’s data?
The ethical elements of this situation are: Responsibility, transparency, and respect.
The situation does not involve any basic human goods that are being denied
However this situation does involve basic human rights being threatened because they’re taking their
own users’ data for their own benefits without much permission from the users themselves.
This specific situation can cause harm or damage to an individual because facebook users can get
upset therefore ruining the company by having no more trust in it.
This situation can cause harm to multiple groups of individuals because many groups prefer to keep
their information to themselves for very specific reasons such as things like safety.
In this circumstance, some consideration for justice needs to go to the users of Facebook since they
were unaware this was happening.
This situation does also involve some consideration for rights because people rights were actually
violated.

least five possibilities. The goal is to produce as many creative ideas as possible. Don’t worry
about complications or drawbacks just yet. In the next step, you’ll narrow down your ideas. For
now, just focus on generating an array of options. Consider the following questions:
●
What different options are available?

Based on all of the research I’ve done on Faebook’s past incidents, Gauze and Effect should not
proceed with a partnership involving Facebook.
My recommendation for the ethical decision at hand is that Facebook should face the consequences
of their mistakes and businesses wanting to work with Facebook should reconsider since their own
customers cannot trust them. I believe Facebook’s business problems are a result of
consequentialism. According to CommunicationScience in
“
Consequentialism & Utilitarianism part
1
”
, consequentialism is when the outcome of what has been done decides whether or not your
actions were good or bad”(CommuncationScience, 2017). As Facebook kept making morally wrong
decisions, their consequences worsened in the form of losing customers, money, public outrage, and
missed business opportunities from companies taking away their shares. Also based on their lack of
honesty with their customers about what was being done with their information, from the start,
they kept repeating the same big scandals that caused them to lose a lot of customers, money, and
business connections. My reasoning for this decision is that Facebook has no right to exploit their
user’s data because their user’s do not give consent to Facebook to do that.
