MHACB/542 Competency 2 Experiences Working with a Group December 31, 2023
A reflection on what I learned about communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution strategies during my group work. When working with a group communication, collaboration and conflict resolution are key and essential. Communication is more of the critical part. Without communication there is no guidance. You must be clear and concise when communicating to others. Listening and being mindful to their ideas is important as a leader. Collaborations is also important and essential when working in a group setting. Being able to work together is important to reach a common goal within the group project. Lastly identifying and resolving conflict resolutions strategies is key when working in a group setting. It is important to have strategies in place when a conflict does arise to address it right away instead letting it drag out and nothing gets resolved. Not everyone will agree on the same things when working in a group setting. Each person needs to listen to one another and be patient. Working together as a team and talking through issues will help the team grow and work better together in the future. Did you change your mind at any point during the project, based on feedback from others? I have a great team to work with. I have never changed my mind when working with them. Sometimes a disagreement may come about, but we discuss it further and come to a resolution right away. We do not let these types of issues drag out. When we have team projects, at the end when all is complete, we have a meeting to discuss the outcome and what we could’ve done different. This has helped us stay successful in the projects we create for training. Was it easy to share ideas freely and come to a consensus on a common goal or solution? My team is very unique. We are trainers and are constantly having new ideas for training materials and future projects. We work on projects together every day. We have meetings to
discuss ideas and new projects with everyone giving insight and opinions on what was discussed. This helps us come up with a plan when actually starting the project. We are able to speak freely and share our ideas. My team is very understanding when an idea they shared is not implemented. During the planning process we always discuss why the idea was not used. This way the team has a better understanding and the “why” behind it. Would you be comfortable, as a leader in health care, choosing which ideas would be used? I would definitely feel comfortable choosing which ideas are to be used. I would consult with my leaders first and ask for their input before anything is implemented. I would first look at the risks and benefits of the idea and ensure that it is proven effective. Weighing out the pros and cons of the idea helps with the decision made. What areas do you feel you need to focus on to make yourself a stronger and more effective leader? I feel that I have worked so hard and have been so focused on my career that I am a very effective leader in what I do on a daily basis. I am very competitive to a certain extent, but want everyone to succeed, learn and grow from me. I set good examples for my team. I am far from perfect, but I set the bar very high for myself. If I hadn’t set goals for myself in the past, I would not be where I am at today. Sometimes I can be too nice and let things slide, but I am working on that every day to be a little sterner. What did you perceive as your biggest challenges in working with the group? The team I currently have is amazing. We seem to all be on the same page when it comes to building projects for training. There have been no disagreements thus far. We all have so many ideas for the future of our training department that we a cannot use every idea. Some ideas get

shut down, but there are always good explanations for it. In the past years ago, I would definitely say working with a group is hard. But I was very young and immature back then and have grown so much. I believe I have the sills to handle disagreements now. If there ever was a conflict, we would handle it and discuss it before end of day and come to an agreement about the situation. I believe avoiding any type of conflict in a group setting and letting it go can cause harm to any organization’s future. Being adults and discussing the issue as it arises will not only help the working relationship, but build more trust amongst the group. Within the areas of growth opportunity, you identified yourself, which can you put into practice immediately? I am able to put all my skills into practice immediately. I have an amazing relationship with my team and superiors. Everything I have learned from my courses has helped guide me and helped me utilize my systems thinking and put it into play. Have been able to study my leadership style and implement it. I have had an issue with being too nice in the past, but I am growing and learning every day. I am able to separate my niceness and make my team understand I am their superior. Our respect for one another is on a level I have never worked work with before. We have very good relationships and am excited for what the future holds for our organization.
