1 8.3 Assignment: Reflection Kathrine Sullivan Indiana Wesleyan University SWK-655: Leadership, Administration and Supervision Dr. Welsh 12/10/2023
2 How do you currently lead? Leadership is a complex and constantly changing or evolving concept that requires individuals to engage in self-reflection and change. My current role as a social worker at a pain and addiction clinic allows me to use my leadership skills. I strive to lead with integrity, empathy, and commitment. I try to establish a safe and supportive environment for the patients and coworkers I work with. I also have a desire to establish trust and understanding and a professional relationship with both co workers and patients. I aim to be approachable and open to various ideas and perspectives while providing knowledge and guidance when appropriate. I am also aware that is important to establish boundaries for myself and my patients as well as coworkers to stay safe and secure. What do you want your coworkers and employees to say about your character, how you treated people, and the impact on their lives? I hope that coworkers or employees recognize that I am respectful and understanding when in a leadership role. I also want to be recognized as a person who is committed to growth, development, and strives to provide support and resources that can assist in their success. I want to be that one coworker that is considered an example of working collaboratively and can build positive professional relations. I also want those I work with to understand that I value their contributions and keep their best interests in mind. What are the gaps or differences between how you currently lead and what you want your coworkers and employees to say about you? I need to be more mindful of how I communicate and provide feedback. I also need to be more consistent with expectations. I need to adjust these things, so my coworkers and patients
3 feel more comfortable and respected. I am also improving my active listening skills and improving my ability to provide and direct constructive feedback. Sometimes we learn a lot from leaders we do not agree with or like. Reflect on some leaders who you did not like or did not flourish under (names not necessary). Why did you not like them or why did you not flourish when collaborating with them? What did you learn from them? I have had the opportunity to gain experience from leaders that I did not agree with or respect. I learned the importance of setting a clear expectation and goal as well as an unobstructed vision and direction. Even when I do not agree with a leader’s goal, I need to be able to recognize the importance of moving toward a vision or goal. I have also been able to learn the importance of being respectful of different perspectives, views, and ideas even when I disagree with them. I have also been able to identify the importance of being respectful and professional during times or disagreements with a leader. Out of the leadership styles provided and discussed during this course of the leadership styles discussed in the course, which one fits you best?  Or  what aspects of each style would you like to combine to make your own? Out of the collection of leadership styles provided throughout this course, the democratic style identifies me the most. I encourage and believe in involvement in my team when making decisions and empowering them to participate in the process. It is important to collaborate and be open and accepting of different perspectives. I tend to value having a clear expectation and establishing boundaries that will benefit everyone. Identify three of your personal core values and describe how they will or do impact how you lead, supervise, influence policy, and address fiscal management. The three core values I have identified are integrity, empathy, and commitment. These values impact how I approach leadership or collaborating with a team or patients. I aim to be

4 honest and transparent when communicating with both team members, coworkers, and patients. I also work toward being understanding and empathetic to the needs and requirements of my team or coworkers. As well as displaying reorganization of other perspectives and ideas. I hold a commitment to my team, coworkers and patients is reflected in the time and effort I put forth when working toward goals and vision. Identify three personal goals in relation to leadership, supervision, and administration. What are some things you can do to meet those goals? How can you start making changes right now? The goals I have identified include fostering a positive, collaborative, and respectful work environment; developing skills and knowledge; creating policies and procedures that are fair and equitable. To meet these mentioned goals, I can begin by engaging my team and coworkers. Discuss their needs and expectations as well as any current policies that they feel need to be changed or edited. I can also develop ways for the team and coworkers to be more involved in decision making. How has this class assisted you in learning about leadership, supervision, and administration? How will this assist you in your future as a social worker? This course has provided me with additional knowledge regarding leadership, supervision, and administration. As well as a deeper understanding of policies and the requirements for editing them. I have also gained additional knowledge of various leadership styles and the importance of being an effective leader. I have also been shown the importance of establishing clear expectations, boundaries, goals. This knowledge will assist with my work as a social worker. It will support the way I lead and assist with establishing creative, positive, and productive working relationships.
