1 Why Change Management Skills Are Essential to Data-Driven Success By Gary Quick Park University Change Management and Conflict Resolution (HRM 636)
2 In today’s business, big data is modeled to essentially alter the way businesses operate. Although this has not been done at the pace that was originally expected. In a New Vantage Partners annual executive survey , only 26.5% of surveyed companies stated they had created a data-driven organization in their company. Over the past six years, this percentage has fallen from a high in 2017 of 37.1% to a low of 24.0% in 2021 (Dykes, 2022) . Instead of seeing more companies becoming data-driven, 75 percent of companies are still struggling to embrace data in their organization. So why the struggle to adapt a company that embraces big data? Let’s look at this Why the resistance to change from big data? The article lists 3 main causes that enable this resistance. One note is that organizations haven’t been accustomed to change from big data. Cultural Resistance: When employees and teams are expected to use data they haven’t used before, the resistance becomes natural. Without strategies and planning to help your employees embrace the new mindset, it’s going to be difficult to build momentum with your data initiatives. Procedural Resistance: Individuals may have reservations on how it is used in a specific business process. Thus, instead of embracing the data driven change, they may wait for its failure so they can keep doing thing as they have done before. Decision Resistance: When data savvy employees are presented with change, they may still reject the change due to their own agenda. An example would be that HR might not want to hear that their training process in not doing well and resist any change because of perceived biases. If you employees are not willing to have an open mind to change, data will have no measurable impact on your organization.
3 To excel data driven change. The article discusses some guidelines to help aid in successful data driven change. Executive sponsorship: Securing this is vital. Leading by example from executive leadership can help secure positive thinking from decision-making. Foster a collaborative relationship with you team: When you have strong working relationships with your teams to ensure data-driven alignment, the process becomes much easier for the initiatives and creates that much sought after “buy-in” factor. Offer data literacy training to employees: This will help reduce the natural reaction to resist data-driven change and lessen the fear of the unknown. Tailor this training to accommodate individuals training needs. Deliver data-driven quick wins: This helps motivate employees and shows them that the change is essentially working. When they see the real-world benefits sooner, it becomes much easier to envision its future. Communicate to build and inspire: Communication is a key element. This is especially true when communicating your “quick wins”. Build you data culture with sold communication. This also aligns with good data literacy training. Real change occurs when leaders create the data-savvy environment and influence the roles that change management must be data-driven. Without this environment, the transformation will probably collapse and hinder morale.
