Chapter 11 Lab: Assessment of Gross Motor Development Group: , , , Kayla Silverio Amy Torres Melanie Arrazola Emeli Matamoros Statement of the Problem The purpose of this lab is to calculate absolute agreement and interrater reliability for observing and assessing the stationary dribble. Reference: Chapter 11 Materials Needed Basketball or playground ball Pencils or pens Clipboard and paper Preparatory Discussion The assessment of gross motor skills is critically important for educational-based placement decisions surrounding adapted physical education and for creating physical therapy programs that maximize outcomes for patients. An important step with supporting assessment rigor is evaluating interrater reliability. Procedure Make a group of four. One person performs a stationary dribble with the nondominant hand. The other three people observe and rate the dribbler. Decide who is your gold standard rater. Calculate average agreement, absolute agreement (see table 11.3 for help), and interrater reliability (see table 11.4 for help). Tables 11.3 and 11.4 include instructions for how to complete the forms. Here are the criteria for you to rate the dribbler: Uses the finger pads to contact the ball (1 = yes, 0 = no) Completes four dribbles in a row without losing control (1 = yes, 0 = no) Dribbles the ball no higher than the hip and no lower than middle of the thigh (1 = yes, 0 = no) Keeps the ball either in front of the foot or slightly to the outside (1 = yes, 0 = no) Scores can range from 0 to 4 points per trial. Complete four trials.

Were there any elements that were tougher to come to consensus on than others? Why do you think that is? What can you do to remedy this? For our group it was pretty easy to control all the factors being observed in this lab. However, I can see there are elements that can be more difficult to improve upon. Using your fingertips seemed to be the easiest element to control without participants. However, the consistent dribbling, height requirement, and dribble placement seemed to be the most difficult. This is because something as simple as having the correct clothes can affect how hard you need to dribble and where you need to maneuver your hands and arms. Also having good depth perception is important for keeping the ball the same height and length from you. And completing 4 dribbles is difficult since you need to be able to complete all the other factors perfectly or else your dribble won’t count. Things you can do to remedy this is by focusing on keeping your dribble consistent. You also need to wear appropriate clothing and have a good attitude to be persistent and never give up. 2. Compare and contrast the absolute versus average agreement. When might you need absolute agreement versus average? What are the implications?
Absolute agreement is the exact agreement among raters in which they rate each trial individually, or one at a time. Absolute agreement is also more of a qualitative score. Average agreement is an agreement (or score) among raters based on the total score, rather than each trial individually, and is more of a quantitative score. It may be better to use absolute agreement when trying to observe consistency among raters. For example, in our experiment, the absolute agreement was “yes” (in terms of dribbling a basketball correctly), since the raters both agreed that the dribbler was dribbling correctly. Meanwhile, it may be best to use average agreement to determine the percentage of agreement among raters. For instance, in our experiment, given that both raters gave the dribbler the exact same score, the average agreement was 100%. These forms of agreement can help imply the similarities or consistencies in people’s judgment, as they help to show just how much people agree on certain scores or not.
