Leader Development Army needs good leaders who can deliver more leaders; therefore, leader development should be the number one priority in the Army and leader development process must be implemented. General Odierno stated that the best leaders create environments that allow individuals to grow and trust subordinates. Challenging Experiences, the Readiness of the Individual to Respond to the Challenge, and Reflection are the three components of the leader development process. Leader development process describes how an organization like Army develops leaders. In the Army, challenging experiences are the challenging deployments or field exercise training because it tests soldier’s mental agility and resilience; however, challenging experiences come in many forms. Mental agility and resilience are the traits that the leader must have in the Army. Helping a subordinate or battle buddy through a difficult time, accepting a project and responsibility that is beyond the scope of duties or capabilities are also examples of challenging experiences. Expanding the scope of what is considered as a challenging experience is a way to leader development process in the Army. Readiness of the individual to accept and respond to the challenge must be evaluated to decide if the subordinates is ready to be a leader. A subordinate should be presented with a challenge that is appropriate to his/her level. If a sergeant is given a task to create a unit movement plan at a division level without any prior experience, he or she is going to fail. No development will be achieved by setting a subordinate for a failure. Senior leader must understand the capabilities of a subordinate and set a challenge that is attainable for development to transpire.
