Philosophies of Classroom Management, Student Engagement, and Motivation Annaleise Diaz College of Education, Grand Canyon University SEC-510: Creating and Managing Engaging Learning Environments Marsha James 03/06/2024
1 My Philosophy of Classroom Management To effectively manage a classroom environment, a teacher must be patient, instinctive, have a level of awareness, and are able to create boundaries. With these qualities, teachers are able to stay organized and are able to keep students engaged. The first step to manage a classroom effectively is for students to establish guidelines on top of the teacher’s. In doing so, students have consistency and they feel as if they have some sense of control. Next would be to document these guidelines and rules that way the teacher and students can not only be on the same page further on, but to feel safe. The third principle would be to avoid punishing a student in the classroom. The reason being is that it only creates distance between students. “ Building healthy student-teacher relationships is essential to a thriving classroom culture, and even sets the stage for academic success” (Rabadi & Ray, 2017). Lastly, involving parents and guardians in the classroom will only allow teachers to better understand how they can help their students at school. It will also give parents the opportunity to be involved in their child’s education and provide more support. Benefits of Effective Classroom Management Traditionalists argue that a more heavily structured approach to classroom management is most effective. This type of classroom management emphasizes strict adherence to behavioral and performance standards and memorization of key learning concepts” (Augusta University, 2023). In the classroom, creating an environment that offers different learning opportunities can benefit both students and teachers. An effective classroom management system can mean less behavioral issues. Students will be less likely to cause disruptions such as talking during lessons. Which will help students feel safe and become the classroom where students feel protected physically, emotionally, and mentally. It can also help students focus on their assignments and
2 allow the teacher to provide assistance to those who need it. Which will then allow students to better connect with their peers and feel comfortable to participate in classroom activities. The reason why today’s classroom management techniques are so important is because it focuses “ on encouraging mental well-being, empowering students and promoting inclusion, as well as preventing behavioral issues” (Augusta University, 2023). Home, Social, and Educational Experiences My home, social, and educational experiences have shaped my personal philosophy of classroom management and student engagement because it has kept me open-minded and has taught me how to develop the ability to acclimate. At home, my parents were not the most comforting when it came to our mental well-being. We were expected to work through our challenges and we would be punished for feeling unheard. This experience shaped my personal philosophy because it made me want to focus on my student’s well-being and figure out why they feel the way they do rather than punish them for their struggles. My social experiences have shown me how important it is to build relationships and how these relationships can be beneficial. When I was an after school tutor and a teacher’s aide, I found building relationships with the students helped them feel comfortable when needing help and it made them feel safe. Lastly, my educational experiences have shaped my philosophy by seeing how the inclusion of both parents and students can make a difference in the classroom. “ An inclusive education system provides all students with the most appropriate learning environments and opportunities to realize their potential. This goes beyond the classroom and into the home. Recognizing parents as an integral part of their child's education and welcoming their involvement in the learning community can lead to innovative solutions and open communication between parents and teachers” (Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium, 2019).

3 Technology’s Role In The Classroom I believe that in my philosophy of effective classroom management, students learn how to hold themselves accountable when it comes to the use of technology. My purpose for technology in the classroom is to use it as a tool in our lesson rather than allow it to become a distraction in their learning environment. “Teaching students how to balance technology usage along with offline socializing and interpersonal skills is essential. But it's irresponsible to proclaim that technology simply distracts, diminishes social skills, and holds lesser value than other content areas” (Marcinek, 2014). Instead of dismissing technology in the classroom and viewing it negatively, I use it as a way to connect with my students and to use it as a way for them to bring their world into the classroom. Allow them to use technology to build their creativity while keeping them engaged with their peers face-to-face. As educators it is our responsibility to prepare our students for changes that affect their education, their environment, and their culture. Being a part of it will only give us a better understanding of how we as educators, can help grow as effective members of society.
