HRPD-702-Mod 8 Topic 2 – Leadership Worksheet Course Code: HRPD-702 Course Name: Contemporary Organizational Behaviour Directions Based on the materials in this topic, download the worksheet and capture your response(s) and then submit the completed document into the appropriate Module - Topic eDropBox folder. Congratulations! You have just been made manager of Fred Fiedler's Fantasy Haven, a specialty candy store. Managers can have, and use, a variety of leadership styles. The appropriate style to use depends on who is being led and elements of the specific situation. What is important in the situation for the manager to consider in figuring out which style will be most effective is defined differently by different Situational/ Contingency Theories? Consider each of the following employees and situations. Which leadership style would you suggest? The styles to select from are autocratic, participative, and laissez-faire. Use each only once. Explain your reason[s] for your choice. Provide your response(s) to: 1. Pops Sickle has worked at Fred Fiedler's Fantasy Haven since it opened 37 years ago. Even though Pops can handle anything that comes up in the store, he always passed up the chance to be manager because he doesn't want the “administrivia”. Everyone else is out sick today so you and Pops are the only ones able to cover the store during the Valentine' s Day rush. What leadership style will you use? Why? In this unique scenario of Pops Sickle, it is quite evident that the theory propounded by Fiedler – more specifically his path goal theory which delves deeper in to the categories of transactional leadership which goes hand in hand with transformational leadership would be the most suitable tool in his arsenal to best address the situation at hand. In this scenario Pops Sickle clearly possesses competence but is devoid of any willingness. In this situation, a laissez-faire leadership style is the most suited. This laissez-faire attitude, which is defined by giving workers the freedom to make their own decisions and assume responsibility for their work, fits in nicely with people like Pops Sickle, who have a wealth of job knowledge © 2020 CENTENNIALCOLLEGE.CA All rights reserved . It gives them the flexibility to use their knowledge and make wise choices, which promotes a sense of autonomy. Furthermore, it would be a grave oversight if the underlying reasons for Pops Sickle's reluctance to assume greater responsibilities were overlooked, particularly in a managerial capacity. In terms of his aversion towards administrivia, it is important to understand that his decision to evade any opportunities to rise above the ranks for a more responsible role such as a managerial role may stem from a genuine preference for focusing on more substantive aspects of the job rather than mundane and, monotonous administrative duties which is mutually exclusive from his actual competency in terms of the job. Taking note of this point of view Pops Sickle harbours and approaching him with a more strategic plan could provide him with the motivation he requires to keep an open mind. In doing so leaders can usher him in the direction to help him overcome any reservations he may have. This could be achieved by measures such as offering opportunities for professional development in areas where he excels, recognizing and rewarding his contributions, and providing clear pathways for advancement that align with his interests and strengths. In conclusion, by adopting a hands-off leadership approach i.e. laissez-faire that emphasizes empowerment and autonomy while addressing Pops Sickle's unique requirements and motivations, leaders can tap into his full potential and optimize his contributions to the organization which would be a win-win situation which would essentially mean that both Pops Sickle and the organization ultimately thrive and succeed. 2. Randy Rancid isn’t doing a great job [maybe “ok”], but his heart is sort of in the right place. He's gotten the chocolate-covered caramels stuck in with the soft creams for the fifth time this week. Your older customers are not amused. Randy has been with the store three years and was hoping to get the manager job. Randy has some new ideas, like developing a line of flavored popcorn. What leadership style will you use with Randy? Why? In this situation with Randy Rancid, who seems to have potential but lacks attention to detail, a participative leadership style would be most effective. © 2020 CENTENNIALCOLLEGE.CA All rights reserved . HRPD-702 CENTENNIAL COLLEGE Contemporary Organizational Behaviour With a participative approach, you can involve Randy in problem-solving and decision-making processes. Given his tenure at the store and his aspirations for advancement, it's important to acknowledge his dedication and willingness to contribute. By engaging Randy in discussions about his ideas for flavored popcorn and involving him in finding solutions to the recurring issue with product placement, you not only empower him but also encourage a sense of ownership and responsibility. (Greiner, 2014) Additionally, by seeking Randy's input and ideas, you show him that his opinions and contributions are valued, which can boost his morale and motivation to improve. This approach also allows you to guide Randy in the right direction while fostering a collaborative environment that promotes learning and growth. Ultimately, involving Randy in decision-making can lead to better outcomes and help him develop the necessary skills to excel in his role. 3. Bubbles Gumm is about to blow it! This is Bubbles first job and she's a little nervous. She doesn't know a cashew from a hazelnut and panics when a customer asks for the All-American Triple Decker Hot Fudge Sundae. You don't want to chew Bubbles out since she just started a little while ago. What leadership style will you use with Bubbles? Why? In this situation with Bubbles Gumm, she is new and lacks direction to do the job correctly. If this situation will be viewed on the Situational leadership model of Hersey and Blanchard, Bubbles Gumm demonstrates that she is unable but willing. According to Chiang et al. (2020), significant levels of control over subordinates are a feature of autocratic leadership style. Since there is an immediate need for action or decision-making, an autocratic approach may be required to ensure a quick resolution. For example, if there is a customer complaint that requires immediate attention and Bubbles is unsure how to handle it, giving clear, direct instructions in an autocratic manner may be appropriate. In addition, if Bubbles is unable to complete a task even after being given direction and assistance, it may be necessary to take an autocratic approach in order to deal with performance issues more directly. © 2020 CENTENNIALCOLLEGE.CA All rights reserved .
