End of Semester Reflection - What did I learn? It is clear that in recent years the concept of sustainability has gained awareness and significance for consumers and companies alike. That is one of the reasons why I took this course - sustainability continues to move toward the forefront of public opinion and is therefore becoming an increasingly crucial component for companies to consider. With this in mind, and my entering the corporate world soon, I was intrigued to learn more about how sustainability plays a part in a company’s supply chain. Now at the end of the semester, I can say that this course has been an eye-opening experience that has exceeded my initial expectations. Again, I started this course with a genuine interest in understanding sustainable practices within supply chain management. However, this course explored beyond surface-level sustainability concepts and gave me perspective on the complexities of integrating sustainability throughout the entire supply chain. I now understand how ensuring true sustainability within a company’s business structure goes well beyond traditional environmental practices and involves environmental considerations in every facet of the supply chain. It involves sustainable sourcing that goes beyond direct suppliers and considers how the raw materials are being procured by Tier 3 suppliers. The various articles we read throughout the semester and discussed in class were excellent real-world examples that displayed the multitude of other approaches there are for achieving sustainability in varying industries. For example, one case that I found especially interesting was the one about Interface Net-Work’s program. I was fairly familiar with the concept of remanufacturing beforehand, however, their strategy of remanufacturing something into a completely different product (fishnets into carpet) was new to me. Throughout this class, it has also been interesting to see the learning curve that exists for companies when it comes to successfully implementing sustainable initiatives. Although some companies have practiced sustainability for some time now, it is still fairly recent that the expectation for companies to truly prioritize it has surged.
Through my research of Unilever and through listening to the other presentations in class, it has been interesting to see the trial and errors of companies who are still navigating their way to sustainability. For example, Unilever had to end its Sustainable Living Plan as it failed to meet half of the goals it promised it would. It is only now, ten years later, that they are declaring an approach that takes into account the whole supply chain with goals that are actually attainable. This and countless other examples show the importance of evaluating the entire picture before you can jump in and try to fix it.
