A corporate sustainability report is given to stakeholders such as employees, investors, customers, and the public in reference to the organization’s environmental, social, and governance initiatives. The sustainability report is used to encourage ethical business practices. Three companies that utilize a corporate sustainability report are Microsoft, Coca-Cola, and Chevron. There are some companies that do not offer an annual sustainability report including Volvo.
Microsoft made a pledge in 2022 to be “a carbon negative, water positive, zero waste company by 2030, and to protect more land than we use by 2025” (Microsoft, 2023, p. 10). Microsoft has a chief sustainability officer by the name of Melanie Nakagawa. The organization has been issuing corporate sustainability reports since 2020. The most recent report is eighty-one pages long and explains Microsoft’s role in sustainability in what they refer to as three spheres of influence: Microsoft sustainability, customer sustainability, and global sustainability (Microsoft, 2023). Microsoft even provides a six-step process on creating your own environmental sustainability report. The Coca-Cola Company provides an equally impressive corporate sustainability report. The Chairman and CEO, James Quincy, states “Our strategy is clear. It is centered around people – our consumers and employees – and driving sustainable solutions that build resilience into our business to respond to current and future challenges, while creating positive change for the planet” (The Coca-Cola Company, 2023, p. 4). Coca-Cola has sustainability goals in six areas including water leadership, portfolio, packaging, climate, sustainable agriculture, and people and communities. Their goal for water leadership
is to achieve 100% regenerative water across 175 facilities by 2023 and the goal for packaging is to make 100% of their packaging recyclable globally by 2025 (The Coca-Cola Company, 2023). This is the sixth year that the Coca-Cola Company has issued an annual sustainability report. Chevron offers both a corporate sustainability report and a climate change resilience report. In their sustainability report, Chevron provides a roadmap to impact opportunities in climate, nature, and people. One of the organization’s main goals is to advance renewable fuel production to a target of 100,000 barrels per day by 2030 (Chevron, 2023). The vice president of strategy and sustainability, Balaji Krishnamurthy, states “Our commitment to operating safely, responsibly and with integrity is at the core of who we are. We are always striving to improve our performance, and this powers our work to deliver lower carbon energy to a growing world” (Chevron, 2023, p. 16). Chevron has promised to lower carbon emissions, protect the environment, empower people, get results the right way, and embrace technology. The Volvo Group does offer a sustainability report, but they do not do so annually. The last report was provided over 2 years ago. I was not able to locate any information as to if the corporation plans to issue them annually. References
