Today’s workforce is diverse and to succeed it is imperative that you understand how the cultural orientation of a particular country may affect how business communication is interpreted by others. Many researchers have studied the cultural dimensions and differences of each country based on power distance, masculinity versus femininity, avoidance of uncertainty, and long-versus short-term orientation
(Mor Barak, 2022). For example, the United States is a masculine society, and the management team communicates in a direct and assertive manner. If an American was transferred to a feminine society such as Norway and managed his team in the same manner he would be viewed as rude and arrogant. It is easy to misread social cues or inadvertently offend another if you are unaware of their cultural norms. This may cause conflicts or the loss of business opportunities. Strategies that managers can use to reduce the likelihood of cross-cultural miscommunication can range from something as easy as having an interpreter to the lengthier process of having a mentor to help you learn the cultural norms of the host country. The easiest way to avoid misunderstandings is to hire an interpreter. This will ensure that what you are saying is accurately translated to the receiver of your message. You should also take the time to ensure you research the host country and their norms. If the manager is going to a country where there are other employees who have been immersed in the culture, you can start a mentorship program. The mentor can help the employee become acclimated to the culture and help ensure a smooth transition. References
