This case study, which centers on the life of well-known baseball player and prosperous businessman Andre Thornton , addresses the themes of diversity , leadership , and entrepreneurship . After retiring from professional baseball, Thornton, a successful baseball player, chose to test his entrepreneurial skills. He began by managing Applebee's restaurant chain before creating his own company, Global Promotions and Incentives (GPI) Procurement Services . His path of experiencing highs and lows but never faltering as a leader and businessman is incredibly motivating. In addition to belonging to a minority group and experiencing repeated rejection from large corporations, Thornton never gave up, and that is the mark of a genuine leader. A leader functions similarly to a rudder on a boat, guiding and maintaining direction; however, without a sturdy hull, a boat would not be able to capture wind or sail, nor would it be able to coast aimlessly without sails. 3

often deal with high-pressure situations and can compete with opponents—teaches resilience . He thought that the key to sell in an open market was perseverance , or the capacity to be struck twelve times and get back up thirteen. He related business and sports by mentioning don’t get too excited or lose focus; remember the business goal . In addition, he knew how to handle ups and downs in both his personal and professional life since baseball is a game full of achievements and failures. Thanks in large part to his successful networking during his baseball career, which drew in a lot of business, GPI was a success. After playing baseball for 11 years, he decided to change careers and took on the task of managing an Applebee restaurant . His network of assets was his lifeline as an entrepreneur. By virtue of his game, he possessed customer service skills . When Applebee bought them, he realized business was a vehicle for increasing wealth. He discovered the disparity in wealth and money while overseeing restaurant branches. He says that wealth is an assortment of assets, whereas money is merely one item. He may have money at the end of the day, but he ought to have invested it in an asset. After selling Applebee, he discovered GPI, a further prospect worth more than 16 billion dollars, which proved to be an incredible opportunity. Thornton saw both personal benefits and setbacks in the business world as a minority. Starting with the advantages of being a minority, he was able to establish strong relationships with other minority groups by being aware of their struggles. As a result, additional minorities began to trust his company. Despite being a member of a minority group, Andre never lets it get in the way of his drive for success. He was able to be adaptable on several occasions, which greatly aided his business. However, the other 7
side came up with some obstacles. Large companies did not trust his company. Based on the quality of their products and services, they were judged. There has always been a cultural divide that has hindered the company's progress. 2. What does GPI have to offer its clients? Does the fact that it is a minority vendor help or hinder the company? Three significant business sectors are served by GPI Procurement Services: finance , health care , and business and industry . It offers a range of services, such as hospital clothes and uniforms for the medical sector, as well as incentive and promotional programs for both small and large businesses. Because GPI was able to transform into a procurement management firm because of market demand and opportunity, it is also capable of designing programs, sourcing products, and bringing cost effectiveness to various industries. When it comes to terms and conditions, pricing, customization, and customer service, GPI is considerably more flexible than large companies. The business is more knowledgeable about the sector. The company started out as a promotional company , but as their partnerships grew and more international prospects presented themselves, they eventually transformed into a procurement organization . This organization benefited greatly from Andre's previous experiences in terms of teamwork, 8 GPI business sectors Finance Sector Business & Industry Healthcare
struggles, social interactions, etc. GPI tries to be creative, boost growth, and provide the best customer service for their clients. Global shipping is one of GPI's advantages , enabling anyone, wherever in the globe, to purchase their products. There have been cases when clients have requested further services in different industries because they were pleased with the success rate of managing multimillion dollars, the way that the best products and services were delivered, and the method of delivery. Compared to their rivals, they keep their word and deliver the greatest customer satisfaction and service to their clientele. Since there are a few minority vendors, they are realistic and distinctive . The corporation was also hampered by the flip side of being a minority. They became aware that they were losing money and time because they lacked an effective management structure when they observed that every business division was purchasing from its own vendor. The widespread misconception also worked against them, so he had to be practical and proactive in developing a presentation to dispute the notions that his potential customers held about their lack of resources, the quality of their goods, their lack of trust, and their level of knowledge of their offering. Summary An entrepreneur is someone who seeks to succeed by taking chances and making the most use of all available resources. A successful leader is one who can overcome any obstacle, regardless of the size of the organization. A team is formed when members concentrate on the primary objective and collaborate to achieve it. Despite challenges like minority groups, cultural diversity, and other issues, a leader never gives up and leads his team to success. 9
