i) Was Kittyhawk a disruptive innovation from HP’s perspective? Why/ why not? 3 points Definitively, I do not consider Kittyhawk as a disruptive innovation from HP’s perspective based on two reasons, but the Idea was innovative and disruptive. Disruptive means that the new product should shake the market industry and threaten to replace the old ones. The disk size was different from wat was on the market, it has greater storage capacity and a and has a capacity allowing the hard disk drive to withstand a three- foot drop without any loss of data. At that time, this type of innovation would automatically make the old disk drive obsolete, but they did not define their new market target to create their network value. Based on those two reasons, the product couldn’t last long unfortunately. ii) What ‘mistakes’ did HP make while designing and commercializing Kittyhawk? 1 point They did not define their target market at the beginning. The management team did not do a good job based on the market research in my opinion. Unfortunately, the product could not have a market net value.
iii) Building on those mistakes and using the 2*2 matrix, explain if HP was treating the innovation as a sustaining one or a disruptive one. 6 points In my opinion, it was threatening the disruptive innovation. HP was offering a unique and superior product and threatened to replace the traditional ones. They was smaller, more resistant, portable, and has more storage capacity.
