Kimberly Barrick 8-2 Project 2 Statement of Leadership 6/23/23 I am a well-rounded leader, my participative style coupled with my high emotional intelligence and top-notch leadership skills makes me highly suited for a management position. My ability to listen and empathize with my team means that I can effectively communicate different kinds of information in an effective way. I am able to read the situation and approach it in the most digestible way for everyone. This is important when working in a leadership setting, if you are unable to efficiently communicate with the people you are trying to lead it will lead to misunderstandings and low productivity caused by subpar information. I also possess the ability to utilize different decision-making models to work through different decisions in order to get the best results. A productive and happy team needs to be able to count on their leader to be able to work together with them to solve these issues, as making everyone feel a part of the major decision that will affect them is very important to my own personal style. Even though I already consider myself a very good leader, there are always areas that can be improved upon. I am a VERY emotional person. I put my heart and soul into everything I do. Sometimes my emotions can come off as a bit neurotic when I lose touch with my self- regulation. This is an area that I am constantly working on improving. It is very important in a leadership setting to stay cool, calm, and collect, providing a strong backbone and voice for our team. I pride myself on being able to make and maintain positive relationships with my coworkers and teams, however, this is something I want to continue to work on as I progress though my career. Interpersonal relationships are key to being a successful leader, so I want to always stive to grow in this area.
Being able to lead and follow is a very important part of working in a team setting. There will be times when you are not the most qualified to run a project/initiative and being able to recognize when to step back and let someone else take over is a very useful tool. Being able to flip flop between the two roles means you will be ready to tackle any situation the right way. As a leader I know that I am really good at taking charge in a situation, delegating tasks, brainstorming ideas with my team, and making tough decisions. Even with my strong pull to lead, I also am able to sense when it is time to step back and follow someone else’s lead. I don’t let ego or pride stop me from doing what is going to benefit the team. I feel like this is a very important thing to understand and practice while in a position of leadership. Work is done more efficiently, and everyone feels like their knowledge and experience is being utilized to the best of their ability. I prefer to utilize the democratic/participative leadership style. This style is key to making sure that my team feels involved in the work that we are doing. Working directly with the team in order to make big decisions about projects or about how different things are handled helps my team feel like they are fulling engaged in not only the projects they are working on, but also give them the ability to affect higher level decisions. Using this type of leadership style has the potential to raise the overall satisfaction that my team feels with leadership and the work environment in general, which is VERY important for me. I have worked under leadership that cares little about our personal satisfaction with the job, so I know that it is one of the main things I want to focus on myself when in a leadership position. I also want to incorporate continued learning into my leadership style. I want everyone to feel like they are qualified to work within the position that best fits them and could learn and grow in positions they may not be the best at.
