Siddharth Shirolkar Westcliff University ORG500: Organizational Behavior Professor Dr. Latanya Gordon August 17, 2023
An academic course in Organizational Behavior helps to study and understand human interactions and factors that influence human behavior in an organization (Kopp, 2023) . In this course, we covered different concepts in Organizational Behavior and the assignments helped me get a better understanding by applying these concepts to real- world situations. The Personality DQ made me reevaluate myself and my work attitude towards the team. Understanding the requirements for a perfect team member, and a perfect supervisor helped me realize the areas I needed to work on to be a better contributor. Similarly, the Perception DQ was quite interesting as it provided an opportunity to find out how the people I interacted with perceived me. Some perceptions were spot on while others seemed farfetched. Regardless, it helped me build better bonds when they saw me implementing their suggestions. The Needs DQ was especially thought-provoking. The multiple motivation theories helped me understand the factors that influenced our work attitude. A manager who understands the needs of the team can be very influential in their growth. I look forward to implementing the same in my future leadership roles. The Persuasion DQ required critical thinking as we had to maximize our persuasiveness for a potential real-world situation. The research for it gave me unique ideas to be polite but effective in persuasion. The CLA and PA assignments required plenty of academic research on organizational behavior concepts. These assignments were highly thought-provoking and required the application of concepts learned to certain organizational situations. They
also helped to improve paper writing and the ability to convey information in a concise format. Prior to this course, I had a scarce understanding of factors that affected human behavior in organizations. McShane (2021) covers multiple concepts ranging from the effects of personal values, team dynamics, motivation, and leadership in organizational settings. As the course progressed, we studied these different concepts, and the research on them for various assignments both challenged and strengthened my understanding of organizational behavior. The paper assignments required peer-reviewed research. To identify relevant sources, a deeper self-understanding of the provided situation was necessary. It helped narrow down the research. Reading the chapters and researching for assignments and papers greatly improved my knowledge of Organizational Behavior. I’m enrolled in the LDR 500 - Organizational Leadership and FIN 500 - Financial & Accounting Skills for Managers courses for the upcoming session. The concepts I have learned from Organizational Behavior would help me better understand a leader’s role in knowing the company’s employees, the culture they value, and the motivation that fuels them (Kopp, 2023) . A manager needs perfect candidates for the team. This requires an understanding of the candidate’s personality along with their skills. Also, talent retention is important for any organization to foster innovation that boosts growth. From a financial perspective, an understanding of organizational behavior would help me better assess risks for an organization, take decisions that benefit both the employees and the company, and determine rewards appreciated by the employees.
