Hello Professor and class, Two examples of situations where the collaborative or competitive strategy was utilized and the benefits that it offered while working in the healthcare field. I will give two scenarios where the competitive strategy was used and one where the collaborative strategy was used. The scenarios that are being used are situations that I had to deal with this past week and did not know that this was what I was doing. A collaborative strategy is when you "objectively evaluate differing views, which can lead to creativity and new ideas." (1) During my shift at a behavioral center I and staff came across a situation dealing with a patient. The situation was the patient was in a manic stage and had become very violent towards staff and other patients. Yes, we worked fast on coming to a solution but the process that was taken in writing seems to have taken a long time. We had to ensure that we kept the patient safe along with staff and the other patients. I suggested that we isolate the patient and take the patient into a time-out area to talk to staff and be in a staff-controlled environment. This would illuminate any other persons becoming injured. Another staff member suggested we get an order from the doctor to have the patient put into a restraint chair and also give medication for anxiety. With our two approaches coming together with the short staff that we had we got the patient safely isolated and placed into the restraint chair along with a nurse giving them medication. When you break it down I only suggested part of a solution while another coworker suggested another part by viewing the situation differently. My goal was to get the patient away from other patients and staff. I did not want to use the equipment due to the patient could be talked to with a protected door between them and the staff. My coworker's view was to not only get the patient to safety but also to medicate. We both got the outcome that we wanted. This strategy allows coworkers to use their knowledge and come up with multiple ways to get a positive result. A competitive strategy is "another short-term solution that involves assertively resolving a conflict when one person has more decision-making power." (1) The situation was where to leave the heating meal box (a heavy black box that keeps cooked food at a serving temperature). The president of the company suggested that we keep the box once it's delivered downstairs so that if staff is not there they can carry the box from the upstairs kitchen to the downstairs hallway so that the box can still get picked up. I suggested that we take the meal box along with the food upstairs due to the time that the food is delivered and the time that the first clients arrive the food would no longer be at the serving temperature therefore the box needs to travel up and down the stairs. The President of the company made the statement that his idea makes logical sense due to the staffing ability. I began to take the box to the upstairs kitchen and bring it back down for the box to be replaced
for the next business day. This has been going on for about a month now and when the president saw what I was doing he agreed that what solution that was given does make it easier and it is needed. In this situation, I decided to resolve a conflict with someone who was in a higher position in the chain of command than I was. No, I did not lose my job or get written up for insubordination but the president learned that it's other good ideas that come from his staff than just his ideas alone. Resources 1.
