Report
Class, Productivity is monitored and analyzed in all sorts of business models. Simply put, it involves measuring output per unit of input, and transportation management systems (TMS) are used to track productivity to optimize operations and services. Productivity can be observed at the individual level, department/section level, or organizational level. It’s all about maintaining sustainability and competitiveness. According to BTS (n.d.), “Inputs may include capital, labor, energy, materials, and services. Productivity increases when a business produces the same output more efficiently by using fewer (or lower-cost) inputs. The reverse is also true” (p. 5-1). This is essential for economic growth, and things like transportation infrastructure, technology, and labor impact transportation productivity. The aim is to reduce costs, enhance economic activity, and serve consumers. The topic I’ve chosen is emerging technologies because technology is the “way ahead.” For example, my company is in the works of developing an entirely new system in which we coordinate all orders, tracing/tracking, invoicing, customer service, and productivity. We are weeks away from making the transition, and our product owner and information technology teams have been working diligently to perfect the new version of our container management system. It’s going to be awesome, and I’ve already had a few sneak peeks. IL (2023) wrote, “Companies that may use TMS software include logistics providers that manage multiple modes of transportation, including trucking, rail, and ocean shipping, and retail companies that need to control the delivery of goods from suppliers to their warehouses and stores” (para. 10). Such technology is vital in today’s competitive markets, and organizations utilize it to measure productivity across the board. Can anyone provide other examples of how technology improves productivity? Eric BTS. (n.d.). Transportation productivity.
