How did having a strong "why" drive needed changes at Nike? Simon Sinek emphasizes the importance of having a clear purpose or "why," which is exemplified by Nike's experience with the Golden Circle model of "Why, How, What." Initially, Nike only focused on their "what" and "how," neglecting the importance of their "why." As a result, they struggled to retain customers and faced criticism for overworking their employees. It wasn't until they recognized the value of incorporating corporate responsibility into their purpose that their "why" became clear. Nike had to prioritize sustainability as a key component of their growth strategy, ultimately leading to their success. (Paine, Hsieh, & Adamsons, 2016). How did authenticity and vulnerability play out at Nike, allowing needed change to occur? Nike acknowledged the importance of valuing their stakeholders and took action to address the criticism against them. They appointed Maria Eitel as the vice president of corporate responsibility to demonstrate transparency and accountability, acknowledging past mistakes and showing a commitment to making things right.
