Case 1 1. Given the facts of this case, should John have been discharged? Why or why not? Ok I see that the policy states that the code of conduct for employees is “Employee off-duty behavior in no way should reflect unfavorably upon the company, its employees, or sales of any educational materials.” In my opinion I don’t believe that he should have been fired. They should have made him do a public apology at most. John Hillard can sue for being fired. I understand that he bought those items as a gag gift but outside of work what he does is his business. How do we know that he wasn`t going to use the items with his wife? Per the bible in Hebrews 13:4 it states that the bed between husband and wife are undefiled meaning that anything sexual is between husband and wife. The company shouldn`t come up against a man if he was using those items with his wife that is a private matter and between him and his wife. Now making a public apology and maybe writing him up would be more suitable because he did go against the company`s policy. I believe that if they wouldn`t have made him make a public apology in front of the board or write him up that would have been enough for what he did. Plus, who is the one that took the picture of him or saw him? Was it just his supervisor or a parent? 2. Should the sales representatives of AEM be held to a higher standard of personal conduct than sales representatives for other types of organiza- tions? Explain. It doesn`t matter which company you work for you should be held at the same standards. If the sale representatives are not supposed to do something because it may make the company look bad, then that`s what the rules are. Now I also believe that it depends on what the sales representative did. If he went to jail for selling drugs or something else them yes, he should be fired. Only extreme things should a person lose their jobs, especially someone that is so beneficial to the company. Sales representatives are the face of the company the ones that go out and try to sell the company to buyers, they all should be held at the same standards. 3. Should management have considered John’s past work record before deciding on discharge? Explain. Yes, I believe that the company should have considered his previous work experience. John was a great worker and has never had any previous disciplinary actions come up against him. He was the top sales representative and made the company a lot of money. If he was as good of a worker as they mentioned, then the company would have weighted all of their options before terminating him. As stated above the most he should have had to do was apologize and be written up at the most. Case 2 1. Why don’t all companies treat their employees like Whole Foods does? I believe that other companies chose not to treat their employees like whole foods because it would take the control away from the heads of the company. The CEO and all the executives make 6 figure salaries in a lot of companies while the employees are barely making it. The executives of the company feel like that they are the only ones that know what`s best for the company or how to make it
better. But if the executives of the companies are not the one facing the consumers, do they really know what’s best? A. Do you think they will in the future? I don`t think so. The only way that other companies would adopt this way of thinking is if their employees started leaving the company to go to whole foods. Companies want to always have control of their employees and any other thing that has to do with the company. The high executives feel like that it`s an honor to work for their company and that any employee can be replaced. Big corporation are notorious to not even knowing what is going on in their companies with the “lower” workers. For example, on the show undercover boss, the CEOs of the companies go undercover to see of their business are running and how their employees are doing. In most cases once they go undercover they find out that the company isn`t running away like they thought. It usually causes the CEOs to go back to the drawing board and think of better ways to run their companies and better ways they can provide for their employees. 2. Can “eco-consciousness” effectively be incorpo- rated into high-performance work systems? Eco-consciousness is explained as “marked by or showing concern for the environment eco - conscious consumers.” I only believe that it could be effectively incorporated into high performance work systems if the company itself is an eco- conscious company. Therefore, these ideas work for whole foods because their motto is “whole food, whole people, whole planet.” It wouldn`t work for a company that makes plastic bottles or waste dumping company because of course they are not eco- conscious companies.
