M2A1: Practice Scenarios
1.
Write a description of an event that has taken place using informative language and avoiding expressive or emotive language. The event can be something in the news or even something you recently experienced. Make believe that you are the reporter who is reporting on the event, trying your best to keep your own feelings and attitudes out of your description by choosing language that is factual and emotionally neutral.
A 19-year-old student was found unconscious in the parking lot at Mississippi State University. In a vehicle, they were unresponsive. Recent evidence has been gathered. The Mississippi State University Police Department issued a call on Sunday at 1:10 p.m. The pupil who was spotted in the parking lot was identified. The university is providing counseling to those who have been affected. After this
incident, business as normal resumed.
2.
Now, revise your report, turning it into an editorial by discretely adding some emotive or expressive language.
At Mississippi State University, a tragic incident occurred when a 19-year-old student, Maxwell, Curtis Pennebaker, was discovered unconscious in a car in the parking lot news of a distress call made to the Mississippi State University Police Department at 1:10pm, on Sunday, which brought the incident to the surface. The campus community, now that it knows its student’s identity, is coming together in grief and solidarity to offer advice for those who touched by this terrible loss. As they deal with this painful moment, the strength of their community shows through as they start to go back to a daily schedule that is always conscious of the impact of such an important event. 3.
Go online and look for a news source such as an online newspaper or a major news network such as CNN, Fox, NBC, ABC, or CBS, and find a news report that is supposed to simply report the news but is really a disguised editorial. Write a brief paragraph describing the news story, the news organization you found it on, and what expressive and/or emotive language you found in it that makes it more like an editorial than a news story.
This is a CNN news report published on August 28, 2023, covers Joe Biden's trip to Vietnam. The article provides detailed information on President Joe Biden's visit to Vietnam, as well as its importance for improving relations with the two countries. The CNN's news service provides all the necessary information on this visit, while also using emotive language to highlight its importance. When words such as "shore up US alliances" and "increase peace, prosperity, and stability in the region" are used, they add an emotional dimension that emphasizes the significance of the visit beyond mere reporting of facts. The article will become more editorial because of its use of language that makes it feel meaningful and connected.
