Bonus Assignment Question 1: You are working with a team of educators in the Infant room. Each of you has
expressed a concern over a child's language development. The child is 18 months old and is getting ready to be moved into the toddler room in a few months. The child has a consistent vocabulary of 7 words and uses them in the correct context. The child will repeat the words that are spoken to her. The child uses incoherent words 75% of the time
when verbalizing to other children and adults. As the primary teacher what tools/strategies will you use to assist and develop this child's language?
Answer: By the end of 18 months, children should start saying as many as 10 words and start to follow simple commands with gestures. According to the scenario described above, the child needs to work on her vocabulary and needs to learn coherent words in order to communicate. The strategies that I can use to help the child are:
●
Modeling bigger and better sentences: For instance, if the child says, “a apple”. As her educator I can reply by saying, “You have an apple on your shirt.”
●
Using gestures along with the words so the child can imitate and understand and start to
make meanings of the gestures. ●
Story reading is also an effective way that the educator can use in order to develop language skills. Question 2: Describe a barrier that families may encounter which may make it difficult to participate in literacy activities. What type of activities or resources do you suggest would assist families to overcome these barriers and increase family literacy?
Answer: A barrier that families can encounter which may make it difficult to participate in literacy activities is illiteracy or language barrier. To overcome this barrier, there are some community resources available for families: ●
Ottawa Public Library
●
ABC Life Literacy Canada
●
EarlyON Child & Family Centres
●
First Words (Includes multilingual resources)
Question 3: What role does play (exploratory, pretend, block) have in Language and Emergent Literacy in young children?
Answer: Children learn communication abilities through play. They verbalize and explain their intentions to others and negotiate rules and regulations set up in the play. They justify their behavior to their peers and get socially engaged in the activities and curriculum . Children acquire the abilities to communicate and they also tend to develop language and literacy skills. There are several play based activities that are specifically for Language and Literacy skills such as Alphabet Bingo.
Question 4: Reading and writing are interconnected. Explain the relationship between reading and writing and how you would incorporate day to day strategies in your daily routine.
Answer: The purpose of reading and writing is the same and reading provides a model for writing. This is the reason why reading and writing are interconnected. According to research, children who read a lot improve as writers. Children acquire text structures and language via reading a range of genres, which they can subsequently use for their own writing (The Relationship Between Reading and Writing, 2010). Talk, Read and Sing together everyday is a strategy that can be incorporated in daily routines in
order to develop the reading and writing skills of children. Question 5: Why is it important for ECE's to know the language and literacy milestones?
Answer: Language development is the foundation of early childhood learning and writing. It is important for the educator to know the language milestones so as if a child lacks, appropriate activities and curriculum can be planned accordingly to help the child pave the way towards their language and literacy development. Moreover, knowledge about language milestones is important in order to understand if the child needs extra help in developing language and literacy skills or he/she is on the track.
