1. After completing your assigned readings, identify and explain 3 knowledge concepts, ideas, or issues that you think are the most important. 1. The chapter presented by Turnbull and Justice titled, The Science and Theory of Language Development , answers questions regarding the importance of studying language development in a scientific manner. One concept that caught my attention was basic research specifically, use-inspired basic research. Use-inspired basic research is a concept that is used by clinicians in the field of speech language pathology. Basic research works to develop, test, and refine theories while use-inspired basic research points to the application of the research findings and its usefulness (Turnbull et al., 2017). 2. The article titled, Many Languages, One Classroom: Supporting Children in Superdiverese Settings , provides an approach called Personalized Oral Language Learning. This approach sets out strategies for educators to utilize in order to create a learning environment for students who speak other languages and provides a culturally rich environment for the children and their families. The specific strategies include, environmental supports, conversation and interaction, and family engagement (Oliva- Olson et al., 2019). 3. Evidence-Based Practice is mentioned as the link of theory, science, and practice. EBP is essential as a clinician and it is an important concept to know because it drives the decisions that are made in treating clients. It is essential to ensure that the research that is being used is backed by evidence and that the clinician is considering all other factors of that client's life into their treatment (Turnbull et al., 2017). 2. Please write about one concept, issue, or idea that left you confused or curious this week. This could be a concept that you had difficulty understanding and/or a big question for the field that goes beyond the content of this course. I was confused when reading through the language development theory overview in Pence Turnbull & Justice (2017). Specifically, in understanding the intentionality model as a domain- general process. How can the intentionality model be broken down in a way that explains the tension to engage with others and the effort required that brings about language development? I am curious to see what else may be required to develop language and understanding this theory in general. 3. Briefly reflect on the knowledge you have gained this week (from the readings and asynchronous content) and how this new knowledge may impact your clinical practice.
The readings this week were informative. I was able to brush up on terminology that I have not heard in a while and really delve into theories in language development. It was interesting to see all the different theories ranging from nature vs. nurture to interactionist. I was pleased to read about use-inspired basic research because it shows that clinicians are using research that are evidence- based and integrating them into their sessions. The reading about supporting children in superdiverse settings was essential. Being able to understand that one language is not greater than the other and fostering an environment for students that meets their cultural backgrounds is key to enriched learning experiences. This knowledge will impact my clinical practice because including the whole family, culture, language, environment, beliefs, values etc. is what makes a culturally competent clinician.
