Discussion #2 Select one benefit and compliance issue identified in Module 3 and share why you feel it is a potentially risky one of which all organizations need to be aware. Use a minimum of one reference from the class materials. No need to respond to other students. The one employee benefit I chose to talk about is “The ability to choose benefits to meet needs”. The reason I chose this benefit as a risky benefit to an organization is primarily due to the changing work environment and culture we see constantly changing. For example, employee Joe decided to pick one of his package benefits to be job location due to his family’s needs. However, employee joe gets divorced and now wants a change of location, or the company now chooses to move him to another location since his initial reason is now unjustified, and they need him in Europe. Either circumstance can erupt into a management and employee conflict where one, or both parties are not happy. The employer devoted their efforts to keep him in one location for his family, but this employee feels he has gone beyond the company’s expectation at this one location, and deserves credit for that devotion. It seems they both want something back but, in the end, it will probably turn sour for both. Organizations need to take precautions in the long-term effects of employees choosing their benefits over others due to many reasons but primarily due to future relationship with the employee and the sense of entitlement the employee expects (UMUG (n.d.) Module 3). The compliance issue I chose is “Equal Pay Act of 1963” I chose this compliance due to a few reasons but primarily due to the uncertainty for the lack of adjustment in pay, ignorance to the difference, and critical thinking toward equal pay for gender and race. The organization is required to pay them accurately and fairly as their same counterpart. This is obviously still a problem today, so that is where the word of
ignorance derived from, for me. For the organization they must take precautions and plenty of forethought in their pay scale, their procedures toward this subject and their clear explanation on how they forecast this equal pay, or this could cost an organization a lot of time, money, and embarrassment.
