Security Awareness Training Case Study
In scenario four, the government agency I am employed by works with the US Army on top military contracts. While monthly training is great in normal business settings, bi-weekly training would benefit those working on top secret military contracts. It is important to stress the importance of cybersecurity when it comes to these projects, as it is a threat to national security. Humans are the most vulnerable component to cybersecurity. If employees are fatigued, stressed,
or financially struggling, it could significantly impact security. Jan bringing her tablet into the room with her is unacceptable. Jan’s personal life situations and emotions are affecting her work and the security of the projects. If Jan’s actions and the gap in trainings are not addressed, the security of the United States is at risk. This is an extremely serious situation and should not be taken lightly. As for punitive measures, and to prevent any more mistakes, Jan should be suspended immediately for taking pictures of the schematic for the project. Consequences of cybersecurity breaches can lead to heavy fines, regulatory sanctions, government audits, lengthy regulatory investigations, and criminal liability. These punitive measures that the company can face are extremely damaging, expensive, and detrimental to rapport (Cybersecurity Developments and Legal Issues | White & Case LLP, 2023). If Jan’s situation is not immediately investigated with a suspension of employment, this company could reap the consequences of fines, audits, and even criminal liability by the Army. It is the military’s
job to ensure national security, so they do not take breaches lightly. This company could be completely shut down because of Jan’s actions.
Proactive security mindset is beneficial for all levels within the organization because it focuses on preventing security breaches versus responding to them. Because humans are the most vulnerable component within cybersecurity, training is a huge component to maintain a
successful proactive security mindset among staff. By updating the monthly training sessions to bi-weekly, the information stays fresh in employees’ minds. The organization can prevent data breaches by doing regular vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and security audits. This
way, the organization can detect and fix weaknesses within the systems before they are exploited.
These proactive measures can also lead to early detection of threats which are less detrimental than threats that go days without being discovered. Lastly, being proactive about security can lead to immense cost savings in the long run (The Importance of Proactive Cybersecurity - Devfuzion, 2023).
