Leadership Assessment Technology Integration EDUC 871 Leadership Assessment Technology Integration Technology continues to evolve and change every day; artificial intelligence is taking over and will continue to change our daily lives. This means educational leaders must continue to update, adapt, and change the curriculum with up-to-date information and skills to empower them with the most current knowledge. The curriculum from twenty years ago required students to bring pencils, notebooks, highlighters, and manipulatives to learn and take notes. The curriculum from today requires students to get smart devices, chrome books, and other digital devices to complete their schoolwork. It has also created a different way of teaching, from direct instruction and having students take notes and then work independently to integrating problem- based learning. This learning has students working on real-world problems and the teacher monitoring progress (facilitator), allowing students to learn from their mistakes. The new curriculum calls for student engagement and using their smart devices to complete their work and improve their academic performance. "Technology may also assist school administrators in fostering the development of higher -order thinking skills and promoting deeper learning among pupils. Additionally, it may assist individuals in making well-informed choices about their educational p ursuits (Parkay et al., 2014)”. Teachers need to be experts in blending content instruction with technology and create opportunities for students to engage with technology through project- based learning. Teachers must also be technology students; they must learn their curriculum and what technology applications it uses for instruction. This needs to be completed before the delivery of education; this way, they are ready to assist with any student misconceptions. This is why it is essential to ensure students are given technology awareness classes as early as possible to navigate the systems and use the devices properly. School leaders are responsible for
Leadership Assessment Technology Integration EDUC 871 providing professional development and training for their staff in using district-approved technology, implementing technology in the classrooms, and setting expectations. Another factor that pays into technology usage is the district's resources. Some schools are better funded and provide better resources to their students, better training for their staff, and are better supported to get outside consultants to come in and train their staff in technology implementation skills. This, however, should not be an excuse for a campus or school district not to coach their team to the best of their ability to use the digital curriculum. Education leaders must order the necessary technology devices when adopting a new curriculum; it does no good to have a new digital curriculum and not enough smart devices to ensure every student can complete their academic work. In an underfunded school, it is a great idea to have a strong PTO that can raise funds for the school through fundraisers and other events to have the ability to purchase technology for all their students. Other factors include integrating all students into the curriculum; all students must have equal access and can grow. This includes all special populations, emerging bilinguals, immigrants, and all students to have equity in their classrooms. Despite all the obstacles of integrating technology with curriculum, school districts must find a way to blend their digital curriculum with a smart device for each student. The students from today are different from the students from fifty years ago and will be different from fifty years from now. It is other times, and the curriculum must fit the needs of its students and empower them with the necessary skills to thrive in their current society. This also means more specialized training for staff and ongoing professional development for all professional staff. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by renewing your mind (King James Bible, 2017)”.
