Spreadsheet Data Analysis IT153M5 Part 1A Dr. Kylie King By: Katie Monroe
Microsoft is the go-to in many areas of business. Excel being one of the more well- known applications used for reporting, storing, calculating, and presenting data of all topics in a professional capacity. It allows the user to easily perform calculations and recalculations of data by using numerous built-in functions and formulas (Moriarty et al., 2019 p. 1). Excel has a complex list of features and capabilities. Basic functions of Excel start with entering and editing worksheet data, working with ranges and tables, and formatting worksheets (Price, 2019). As your familiarity with Excel increases, the more you realize how many features and functions Excel really has to offer. More complex features include formulas for conditional, financial, and statistical analysis, advanced charting techniques, graphics, and visualizations with number formats and shapes (Alexander et al., 2019). Furthermore, Excel is a great program for importing and cleaning up data. You can create PivotTables to introduce and analyze data then use What-If analysis to come up with specific scenarios to look for within your formulas (Alexander et al., 2019). Microsoft Excel can analyze large amounts of data to discover trends that will help in decision making. Although Excel’s applications are widespread it still has some disadvantages such as difficulty troubleshooting, and it is not easy to share worksheets online. Microsoft Excel has the ability to customize and configure your program to better suit the needs of your data and the way you work (Harvey, 2019 Chapter 2). Something that sets Tableau apart from Excel is that Tableau will have the same appearance regardless of the type of data source chosen (Monsey & Sochan, 2016 Chapter 1). A brief introduction to Tableau Desktop in Tableau for Dummies explains, “Tableau worksheets are powerful analytical tools, but the real utility of this application is in being able to share the analysis with other people in your organization” (Monsey & Sochan, 2016 Chapter 1). Tableau offers the ability to handle a large
volume of data with ease while also providing interactive dashboards where you can customize a reporting feature and have it available on your mobile or laptop devices (Biswal, 2023). Tableau offers data visualization with a variety of chart types, data exploration with creating and managing relationships between data, define calculations, and create measures, data preparation with tools that allow users to reshape and clean data (Biswal, 2023). Tableau also offers collaboration by sharing reports and dashboards with clients or co-workers (Biswal, 2023). A few negatives of Tableau include not being able to query data, automatic data refresh, and its conditional formatting options are limited to 16 column table displays (Biswal, 2023). Excel is perfect for compiling data into more comprised worksheets. Tableau is a powerful data visualization tool along with PowerBI to use alongside Excel. PowerBI is another powerful intelligence tool to analyze, visualize, and share data (Biswal, 2023). Similarly, to Tableau, PowerBI offers data visualization through charts, data exploration allowing users to explore deep data points and creating hierarchies, data modeling which enables users to create and manage relationships between data sources, and data transformation through tools that allow users to reshape and clean up data (Biswal, 2023). PowerBI offers collaboration through other Microsoft tools like SharePoint, Excel, SQL Server, and Teams (Biswal, 2023). The major advantages of PowerBI are the integration with Microsoft products, the ease of use with a more user-friendly interface. It can also handle large amounts of data and provide fast data processing (Biswal, 2023). However, PowerBI limits on customization options, data connectivity, and dependence on Microsoft products can deter users to lean more towards using Tableau with Excel (Biswal, 2023). Comparing PowerBI to Tableau, Tableau has more advanced data visualization capabilities, but can be more difficult to learn than PowerBI (Biswal, 2023). Tableau provides a high level of customization in appearance and functionality for reports and

dashboards that fits the user’s needs (Biswal, 2023). Obviously, both Tableau and PowerBI have their strengths and weaknesses and can be powerful visualization and data analysis tools used alongside Excel (Biswal, 2023). Depending on the specific needs and preferences of the user will determine which tool will output the best results.
