Module 4 discussion
As technology and the availability of digital tools continue to expand, legal and ethical
issues related to intellectual property and user privacy increase in importance.
Use the questions to guide an original response.
How do intellectual property rights and user privacy relate to information literacy?
How can the evaluation of information sources and resources contribute to the legal and
ethical use of technology?
How can you use your role as a technology leader to advocate for the legal and ethical
use of technology?
Comment on the posts of at least two classmates. APA citations are required only for the
original response.
An individual that is information literate is defined as a wise consumer of information that thinks
critically and is skilled in using technology. Meanwhile intellectual property is “ownership of
ideas and words”(American College of Education, 2022). This and user privacy relate to
information literacy the same way one would relate driving to a car. You can certainly look at the
car all you want, i.e. the intellectual property, but if you don’t have the knowledge to drive it, i.e.
be a wise consumer of information, then it has no purpose. To be able to utilize intellectual
property, understand, and abide by user privacy, it is critical for a person to be information
literate.
When a person takes the time to evaluate information sources and resources, they are actively
weeding out the content that is relevant and high quality via vetting. There are a variety of ways
to identify reliability, validity, and ethics such as the CRAAP test and by doing so, creates an
information pool that helps scholars and people online alike. This process is an example of a
legal and ethical use of technology along with the usage of databases like ERIC and EBSCO.
As a technology leader, especially as a middle school teacher, I believe the opportunity to make
an impact on a child before they head off to high school is critical when it comes to using
technology like social media. Teaching a variety of concepts from digital etiquette to
understanding the concept and application of digital access would help to develop empathy in
students that have never experienced struggle in their technology, but also by having empathy
and showing kindness to others online. Cyberbullying has grown to be a bigger issue, from even
as far back as 2007 when I was in Middle School, and it's unfortunate that we set students up
for failure by giving them technology without an understanding of how to use it in a legal and
ethical way. Like gifting a car to someone without a license but expecting them to know how to
drive it. I liked the idea of using a curriculum that was used at the American University where
they offered free materials and videos about fair use to demonstrate, using these resources in
discussions about making choices
(American College of Education, 2022). All in all, my top goal
as a technology leader would be to create a safe environment for digital learning to ensure my
students are set up for success.
