Question
Write a scholarly posting that depicts what you have learned in the class. Answer these three questions:
(1) What have you learned? (2) How will you use your new knowledge? (3) Look back at your definition
of "disaster" in the Wk1-2 Discussion. How would you edit your Wk1 Discussion definition of "disaster"
based on what you have learned?
Answer & Explanation
Solved by AI
Throughout this course, I have developed a comprehensive understanding of the concept of
"disaster" and gained insights into its many facets that affect the identification and response. I
learned about the various types of disasters, both natural and man-made, and the unique
challenges each presents. I also discovered that disasters are often a result of vulnerable societies
and their inability to cope with certain hazards. I have also learned about the importance of
preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation in managing disasters, and the crucial role
played by various stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental
organizations, and communities, in disaster management.
I plan to utilize this newfound knowledge in both my personal and professional life. Personally, I
will be more equipped to handle potential disasters and respond effectively to ensure the safety
and well-being of my family. I have noticed that first responders often get called to duty without
knowing if their own families are safe, so I want to be better prepared to provide for my family
in such situations.
Professionally, I can contribute to creating more resilient communities in case of disasters if I
work in a field related to disaster management. As a result of this experience, I can make better
decisions in the risk management area and help develop disaster preparedness and response plans
in any organization I work in. Although defining a disaster can be difficult, my knowledge will
enable me to contribute to these plans more effectively and be in a better position to help during
such emergencies.
As I reflect on my initial definition of "disaster" from Week 1, I realize my understanding was
quite narrow.
I used two different avenues to define what a disaster was: Webster’s Dictionary
and the
NDRF - National Disaster Recovery Framework.
Webster’s Dictionary, defined
disaster is defined as a disastrous or catastrophic event, occurring suddenly, and causing a vast
amount of loss of life, damage to property, or financial hardship
("Merriam-Webster,
n.d.).
The NDRF further identifies disasters into categories of “Large Scale Disasters”, which
they define as exceeding the capabilities of the local response agencies and requiring
assistance from state and even federal agencies and their expanded resources.
The NDRF also
categorizes what is considered a “Major Disaster”, which regardless of the cause, the
President of the United States can deploy resources and assistance to the disaster area to
support local and state agencies in the relief and recovery efforts.
However, now I understand that a disaster is not just about the event itself but also about the
societal context in which it occurs. A disaster occurs when a hazard intersects with a vulnerable
society that lacks the capacity to cope with it.
I would now edit my definition to reflect this
understanding: "A disaster significant event that occurs when a society's vulnerability to a hazard
causes a disruption of the functioning of a community or society, causing widespread human loss
of life, damage, material, economic, or environmental losses which exceed the ability of the
affected population to cope using its own resources."
