IT 202 Project One Site Survey Template Joshua Crowley 01/14/2023 Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Stakeholder Info This section lists the project stakeholders: Chief Information Officer Systems Security Officer Assistant Vice President of Finance IT Project Manager Systems Architect Joshua Crowley Operating Systems Provide approximate number of users who currently use each OS: Windows 127 macOS 14 Linux 25 *If there is additional information required, such as details of the OS version or different OSes being used, include here: Windows 7, MacOS El Capitan, Linux RedHat, Windows Server 2012 R2 Server Determine whether the desktops are on a hardware or cloud-based server. Also specify the version of the OS server. Physical X Hardware based server running Windows Server 2012 R2 Cloud-based [Insert X and specify version if server is cloud-based] Standard Hardware for Operating System Types Determine the hardware requirements: Windows 10: Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit 1
Hard disk space: 16 GB for 32-bit OS or 20 GB for 64-bit OS Mac OS El Capitan: OS X v10.6.8 or later RAM: 2GB of memory Hard disk space: 8.8GB of available storage Linux RedHat: Processor: 1 GHz single or multiple CPU, Intel x86-compatible hardware only. RAM: At least 1 GB RAM. Hard disk space: 2 GB HD free space. The repository space requirement is determined by the size of your deployed applications. Windows Server 2012 R2: Processor: 1.4 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor RAM: 512 MB Hard disk space: 32 GB Network Connection Determine whether the network is wired or wireless. Select one of the following: The network is Wireless, recommend moving to a wired connection for stability. Wired [Insert X if network is wired.] Wireless [X] Applications Determine what applications are already on-site and/or which applications employees want to use, as well as which OS supports that application. Indicate by selecting below: MS Office X- supported by Windows, MacOS, can use web browser version for Linux, and other work arounds. Adobe Desktop Publishing Software X- Windows, MacOS can use work arounds for Linux. Corel Desktop Publishing Software [Insert X to choose this application, then indicate which OS supports it.] Windows based application. Oracle or SAP X- Oracle is available on Windows and Linux, SAP is available on Windows, MacOS and Linux. This is browser based. 2
Virus Protection X- Many virus protection services are available for all three. PeopleSoft HR X- This program is supported by all three operating systems. This is browser based. Systems Architect Name: Joshua Crowley Date: 01/14/2023 Proposal This is my recommendation and proposal for the upgrades that should be made for the current setup in this location. Currently, the resources are spread thin with multiple users utilizing different OS styles. I would like to address this first as a majority of users are utilizing Windows 7 currently, followed by Linux RedHat and finally MacOS El Capitan. Being that these are near their EOL, I believe that as a company we should have everyone moved to the same OS and have that be the most updated OS. In this case, I believe we should migrate towards Windows 10. Windows 10 offers coverage for all the required applications and software, as well as having longevity and upgradability. This will allow us to stay the most up to date on both our security needs (Windows 10 offers Windows defender by default as well as updated patches) and Windows constant updates for new definitions and drivers allowing our applications to be secure and primed for any future needs. Having everyone on the same OS will also help with cross company sharing. There will be no need to convert files or make additional changes if we are utilizing the same OS. The next issue I would like to address is wireless setup. I would recommend moving to a Wired configuration for speed and reliability while in the office. The computers will also have wireless capabilities, so we can run a wireless router and various AP points throughout the office. This will allow for both speed and reliability when at the desk, and also for flexibility when moving throughout the office. The wireless backup will also be very important for any visitors or guests that may come to the office. We will want to have a guest network set up for this purpose, for extra security and threat 3

protection. We will also want to set up a VPN for potential remote access from employees as well as general security best practice. This brings me to the next point I would like to cover, our server. Having this physical server on site is beneficial, but we will also want a cloud-based backup. As we often have associates who work from home, moving to a cloud based server seems to be an integral part of this upgrade. This will allow not only for ease of use for our remote employees but will add to our IT administration’s productivity to be able to maintain the server from anywhere. This also brings in a safety redundancy should one or the other server go down. We can also utilize this cloud server to allow for a Virtual Linux OS or MacOS if it is deemed needed down the line by the employees. The next suggestion recommended would be upgrading the hardware. I would recommend laptops as the primary computer, as at least 2/3 of users at any given time could be remote. The ability to pick up your computer and go would be advantageous in these scenarios, based on business needs. Desktops may also need to be upgraded based on the current OS being run, and a faster computer can definitely lead to higher productivity. It may be worth contracting Dell or Lenovo for this expansion. We will also want to ensure we have desktops with higher processers and more ram for the IT and marketing department, as they will have a heavy need for more processing power. Lastly, I would like to cover Applications. Based on having access to the Adobe Desktop Publishing Software, Corel should no longer be required. As always, Adobe Acrobat Pro needs to be included for PDF reading, editing and converting. Everyone should continue to have access to Office365, which will allow for company-wide access to Word and Excel, which are crucial to almost every role. When it comes to virus protection there are quite a few options. Windows 10 as mentioned above, comes with Windows Defender, which is a decent virus protection program. I would also suggest something like Bitdefender, with Malwarebytes as a backup as a supplement to offer the best protection. I would also continue the use of SolarWinds for monitoring and LogRhythm and Splunk offer great 4
insight and reporting capabilities to better track and follow threat trends. We will continue to utilize ServiceNow for our Helpdesk ticketing system. It is both efficient and easy to use. 5
