Vanessa Head IT-200 Fundamentals Info Technology Anthony Moreira 11 November 2023 3-2 Activity: Network Configuration Model 1. Define the following IT concepts, and describe their role and importance within a network: IP address and DNS o IP Address – (Internet Protocol Adress) An IP address is number that identifies the computer or computer network that it is associated with and allows computers to receive and send information. o DNS – (Domain Name System) Easily converts website names into IP addresses. DNS makes searching the web easier for humans. Example – If you want load Amazon on your computer you can type in www.amazon.com versus typing in and needing to remember a specific string of numbers for the IP address. Server and client o Server – Computer software or hardware that provides data and resources to other computers on a network. o Client - A software or hardware device that requests access to a resource or service provided by a server. Examples include cellphone, laptop and desktop computers. VPN – (A virtual private network) An encrypted connection over the Internet from a device to a network. Companies typically have users use VPN to secure their connections when accessed from public networks. The VPN masks your IP address which makes what you do online harder to track. Firewalls - A firewall is a network security device that monitors incoming and outgoing network traffic. Based on security rules the traffic is either allowed or blocked. LANs and WANs o LAN - A LAN is a group of connected computers that are physically close in a centralized location and can be wireless or hard wired. o WAN - WANs are networks of LANs across a large geographical location. 2. Choose one of the following scenarios and create a network configuration diagram in Microsoft Visio using either the Basic Network Diagram or Detailed Network Diagram symbol sets: a. Justin Altuve operates a small photography business out of his home. He connects to the internet through a cable modem connected to a wireless router. For information security, he uses a firewall. On his network, he has a desktop PC, a laptop, an IP phone, and a printer. He uses a digital camera that he regularly syncs with his laptop.
3. For this assignment I chose to make a network configuration of Justin Altuve’s home network for his small business. The network configuration I would recommend is like the one I have in my house for my spouse’s small business. The configuration would be LAN network and each device would have its own IP address. He would be able to connect his devices by ethernet or Wi-Fi. The firewall will monitor and filter out malicious content that is trying to enter the network. I would suggest that the desktop pc be hardwired by ethernet cable to the wireless router to optimize performance and speed. The IP phone, laptop and printer (if it has wireless capabilities) can all be connected through WI-FI and will have service as far as the WI-FI reaches. If needed the printer and laptop can also be connected through an ethernet cable as well. If needed he would also be able to set up his own VPN to log into as well.
