W5: Concepts of Risk Management and Business Continuity
Using the review material assigned in this week's reading assignments, how
would you compare and contrast the following emergency management factors:
Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery.
Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery are all critical in risk management and
business continuity for a company or organization. Mitigation is putting procedures or plans
in place to reduce the risk in a situation. For example, in my experience, when going with a
unit to conduct a field exercise, the team must submit an Operational Risk Management
Form (ORM). If the days, for example, will be high temps, we will ensure that we bring water
bowls out to the field and in every position we are going. We would do this to mitigate the
number of Marines getting dehydrated. Also, the corpsman would ensure they brought the
field ice bath to cool somebody down.
Preparedness is when you properly plan for a situation and should it catch you off guard. This
is being prepared for the “what-if” scenarios that can happen in the cases that you are
participating in.
Using the same example, from the field, if, for some reason, the plan of
reducing somebody's body heat fails, then the unit is fully prepared, depending on how bad
the situation is, to start the process of evacuating the Marines by air or if there is no serious.
The Marines, if stable, can be transported by vehicle with a corpsman in the tactical
ambulance to the location to get treated.
The response I would like to give is to evaluate the scenario being prepared or planned for and
make it better by accepting input and ideas from the participants. Then, rewriting the plan or
procedures and executing it in a practice run-through. It is like having the Marines practicing the
9-line for when they are calling air type of air support and critiquing them afterward for them to
be better over the radio in executing it.
Recovery is what is expected you are using the military to reset the scenario or drill, ensuring
that everyone is safe, nobody involved in the training was hurt or injured, and giving them the
time to recover to do it over again.
The unit is ensuring the corpsman checks on the troop for
medical issues. The commander makes sure all his troops are keeping up with their hydration
after the drill or scenario is done and ensures he sends somebody to the hospital to check on
the Marines’ well-being and status along with the quality of his troops around the area.
All factors are important and are valuable tools that can prepare you for the worst situation,
whether you are a group, company, or organization. The process is the same, but the case it
would be applied to would differ depending on the organization's or company's mission.
